Wondering if you guys could recommend a good upper receiver vise block that will work with both Armalite & DPMS pattern AR-10 type rifles ? and also what do you recommend for a barrel wrench?

Re: AR-10 Upper reciver vise block?

when i installed my barrel, i put my upper between two flat pieces of wood and used a regular vise. i was able to get to 40 ft lbs quite easily and was not concerned with any deformation or distortion of the upper. hope that helps. it was a MEGA MA-10 upper. i was going to use a router to make a little recess to fit the lower and give more support, but really, 40 ft lbs required very little effort and didnt begin to stress the upper. you can buy alot of delrin on ebay for what they charge you for a vise block. but the bottom is flat and the top has a rail so sandwiched between wood to prevent marring, i just didnt want to spend $50-$60 to buy a block i was only going to use once

I make a tool that that will work for both AR15 and AR10 any brand. It clamps on the rail portion of the upper receiver. Mine is made from 7075. I have seen other tools like this but made of different material. I have also used the other brand, it breaks EVERY TIME I have applied torque to the barrel nut. If you are interested in one of these PM me and I will cut you one.

if its a flat top of anykind, you can improvise. its not for everyone, but I never had any problems using this method. I use a press,(one could use a large vise too) some fitted oak or maple pieces of wood(3/4 inch),for the bottom in between the lugs and across the top, and then some 1 inch thick steel plates.to support the wood. works great, especially in a press. not for the average joe.
