Anyone looking to have this done should check him out. He was very friendly and interested in exactly what I wanted. He even called me the day he was machining my barrel to double check. Very reasonably priced I thought for doing custom work also

Not to piss on your work as it looks very nice indeed but I don't know if you were aware that any form of spiral fluting on a barrel is in direct violation of the US Patents held by ER Shaw? I have no connection with Shaw other than being a previous industry customer and good friend of one of the principals.

If you contact them, I am certain they will work with you regarding licensing (for an exceptionally fair price) on the spiral fluting. Talked with them at SHOT '12 and I was given to understand they intend to more aggressively defend their patents. Like I say, not taking anything away from your work and just trying to give you a heads up before you get a cease and desist letter or something from their attorney.

Gman, is one of the principals Thomas W. Saur? the inventor of spiral fluting?lol, please....

I had forgotten that is was Shaw that received a patent on spiral/helical fluting. And in the words of Madeline Kahn, "It's twue, it's twue!!!".

It's a design patent, not a utility patent. That means the patent was awarded as being a unique ornamental design, not a new functional design like with utility patents, and was examined differently.

On the positive side, it's term is shorter than a utility patent, so it expires in June 2014. Plus, they've filed utility patents on certain helical fluting configurations, which can suggest that a design patent to the same/similar features is invalid as having utilitarian function rather than being purely ornamental.

That said, this isn't legal advice - proceed at your own risk.

It seems to me either way that the E.R. Shaw patent specifies that the number of external grooves equals the number of internal grooves (Ref. 6324780). Now, if you had 5 lands and grooves rifle barrel and put six flutes in it, it seems that their patent would not be controlling over your work. Just my 2c...real test would be to figure that with a patent attorney.

Heck, I think that one would be easier to fight. Since it's entire design basis is on the drawings provided, the number of flutes in the drawing are specific as is the degree of rotation, flutes starting and stopping styles, etc... This is also something I think I'd look at with a good patent attorney. The drawings also don't clearly show variant styles of stops and starts on the flutes (eg. flutes with straight starts/stops or other variations) and they don't show multiple fluted sections (like the AR15 barrel Paul did...fluted, then not fluted, then fluted again).
