I am looking to add a magnified optic to an AR15 and had a few questions. Is a one piece more ideal, should I look into an offset, and what brands are recommended? I would like to stay around $100 but, more is acceptable.
Thanks

Re: AR-15 mount

Pretty sure you mean cantilever, not offset. Yes,you will need this type of mount to obtain a proper cheekweld and eye relief with most magnified optics on the AR15.

For $100, the Burris PERP QD is a great option. For a bit more you can get into an American Defense MFG. mount. A little further would be LaRue and after that Bobro.

If you are not looking for a QD mount, there are many to be had in the $50 range. Burris, Weaver, RRA, Armalite and Primary Arms jusy to name a few.

Re: AR-15 mount

Gg&G has a selection of really nicely machined mounts that are reasonably priced. If you don't mind offsetting/or removing your buis take a look at Warne's RAMP mount. I purchased one recently, and although not much time with it... In my opinion in better crafted than Burris' PEPR mount (I'm not calling it dysfunctional in any way).

I posted a quick overview of the RAMP mount Click Here

The amount of forward position in these mounts vary... When you get your scope, your eye relief and its turret placement should help dictate how far you need to go (1.5, 1 3/4, 2, etc...)

What scope are planning to purchase and what config. is your AR?

Good luck

Re: AR-15 mount

The gun will be a 16" carbine with a Noveske or Rainier match barrel. The idea is to hold around 1 MOA out to 200yds. I am liking the idea of a 1-6 but, don't know how I feel about 6x at 200 for shooting the smaller objects.

I am using 5 of the Burris PEPR mounts. 2 are QD 3 are fixed. I have used Rock River and Larue mounts and IMO Burris PEPR serves just as well as the Larue and better than the RRA. SWFA has the best prices on the PEPR at present. The fixed model was $69.95 and was delivered 2 weeks ago.

Re: AR-15 mount

In the past my unit has used many different brands. One aspect we need most often is a higher than normal print because of NV and LRD units. We've had the LaRue LT135 extra high mount but we've moved to the RRA Hi-Rise Cantilever Scope Mount which are the next highest made we can find.

Re: AR-15 mount

Take a look at the DNZ Freedom Reaper line:

I'm on my sixth DNZ ring/mount combo. It has a number of things going for it – it starts as a solid block, and the first CNC machining pass makes what becomes the ring centers... the rings cannot be misaligned. It also eliminates any possibility of the rings loosening from recoil. It’s hard anodized, requires no lapping, has hex-head screws, and best of all – made in the USA, in North Carolina, by Americans. I can’t say enough good things about them – they look like they grew out of the top of the gun.

I also have 1 RRA mount and it also works just well as the PEPR. The main reason I prefer the PEPR is purely a cosmetic issue. For a few dollars more that the $55 the RRA cost I prefer the $69.95 looks of the PEPR. But that's just me.
