I bought a fnar, 308 from FNH. GREAT GUN! However im tired of spending 1 buck a shot, I have had a .223 bolt action great caliber, now im looking into a AR-15 but i here about all these pros and cons ( one guy says get the dpms- the other guy says the dpms is junk) not looking for a maintence gun. im looking for a 50-500 yard simi auto .223 cal rifel any ideas? Also, this gun will be put to the test, mud, snow, rain, dirt, hell. i clean after every hunt/rang use but when I am useing it i need a definite boom every time, i do alot of preditor hunting in all different terrains. thanks for the advice.

LMT, BCM, Daniel Defense are a few that are around the same price point of a DPMS with much better quality.

For a general purpose carbine, as long as you stay with the major manufacturers it's hard to go wrong. DPMS, Bushmaster, Colt, S&W, Rock River, etc. etc.
If you're looking for a quality precision <1MOA AR-15 you're better off going with the more expensive options. POF, LMT, LWRC, etc.
That's not to say you can't make a DPMS or (insert brand choice here) a <1MOA gun, it's just usually a little harder...

If you want to minimize the chances of having out of the box problems and you don't want to spend an arm and a leg, I'd go with Bravo Company or Spike's Tactical.

You can build your own with great components for about the same as a factory built rifle. I like to choose my own barrel.

I've had a couple RRA ARs in .223 and .308 and have not had a single problem and have nothing bad to say about them and do not hear anything negative about them from people who actually own them. I do hear negative from internet shooters who were told by someone who overheard someone who onwned one. I've had more issues from "MIL spec" M16/M4 weapons from the armory during qual/recert honestly.

So i am too dang happy with that fnar! out of the box the only adjustments i made where diferent sized combs(out of the box control!) so what do you have in mind for that?

Yeah, that 1" moa on my .308 is freaking incredible! if i could pull another one from the box with that same control id be in heaven, i also reload my own shells fnh claims the fnar,308 has a 1" moa out of the box, i found the gun likes the 150 grain soft points, i am shooting a tighter pattern then a hornaday sst, i just dont know how to mesure the moa, so on a .223 caliber, what would you sudgeust, im not to worryed about price i want something that will kick untill i do if you no what i mean! and i know i can always change out the barrles, i here the ar-15s are no stop coustimizing rifels. thank you for your time bubba

At a price point I was comfortable with I recently purchased a RRA A4 Varmint upper with a 24" barrel and 1 in 8' twist. It is on a RRA lower I had put together with a RRA NM trigger and Magpul PRS stock. Its been to the range 3 times in the past two weeks and with my handloads I'm getting groups (5 shot) that are ranging from just under 1/2 inch to 3/4 ' at 100 yards. I've got about 160 rounds through it so far without any problems. 24.8 gr. of RE15 using 69 gr. SMK's with Winchester brass is what I'm seeing those results with. I wanted an AR that I could use as a range gun and something to take out for stationary varmint hunting. It's too early for me to make a solid determination as to the quality of this set-up, time will tell. But right now I like what I'm seeing. On a side note, it is quite heavy and not something I would want to have to lug around.

My brother ran into the same problem using an FNAR. It got to expensive for him to shoot. He traded his FNAR for a bushmaster DCM XR series. My other brother has a cheaper bushmaster he ordered from cheaper than dirt. He has shot everything from brass to steel from wolf to tula without a single malfunction. Memorial day weekend we were shooting at steel target at 500 yds.
His bushmaster was accurate as hell. The only fault I could find if any was that his trigger was not as smooth as my RRA which has a great 2 stage trigger.
Both manufacturers of AR's that we own have been very reliable. So it really makes me wonder those that have had issues if any actually owned one or were more gossip spreaders than true experienced shooters.
I would gladly go against any of your high dollar AR's.
So uncle tuck if you can get an even trade money wise go for it. There is a lot of brand loyalty here as much as name droppers that pay a lot of money because of name. Keeping your weapon clean and oiled well will help with malfunctions if any. Some AR's like to be wet other's lightly oiled. You just have to figure which one it is with yours.
Remember a chevy, ford or toyota truck will get you from A to B just as well as a cadillac , porsche , or mercedes. Just depends where your needs are.

Hmmm, I think a good shooter can compensate for a bad trigger but you can’t beat a great barrel, to me the barrel makes the gun. But then again I have a 600.00 DPMS that I can hit steel with at a 100 meters all day long off hand and I have a blast doing it.

Night adaptive Range 200 yards passive,500 yards reactive. . ,FROM ACTIVE TO PASIVE . Its my end game long gun kit.

Piston conversion systems typically suck because they tend to be problematic.
If a guy wants a piston gun, he should buy one that was built as a piston from the ground up such as the POF and LWRC.
There are others but those two tend to be the most talked about when talking about piston guns.

It's a proverbial hit and miss with quality and reliability. I will never again own a new rifle from any Freedom Group owned company as long as I live.
It is very evident in some of their products. For instance, since they acquired H&R 1871 their barrels are visibly different in quality, and are being mass produced to sell to the masses with the maximum profit margin in mind.
Long story short .... go with a company that is owned 'OUTSIDE' the Freedom Group. The Freedom Group is nothing more, with every literal sense of the term, a gun cartel !!!

OP. It looks like you'll be packing this weapon? If you're not stationary the long heavy barrel smoke poles might not work for you. I've owned many..many ARs and build them now. A factory RRA 24" stainless bull barrel factory rifle with it's chamber 1/8 twist, and two stage match trigger will produce sub-moa results out to your intended ranges with the right ammo and the weapon (prior to optics) will run you just north of $1k.
If a pack gun is in the works you have many options in your price range. Some are bad mouthing the piston systems here but might I suggest (as an owner of 3 different piston driven uppers) that you take a look at the complete rifles produced by PWS. They will run in the $1.5k range. prior to optics, will have the controls of an AR-15 with the reliabilty of their long stroke piston system (read, AK47 reliability). You won't have to run this weapon wet (lubed up) after many rounds and they have proven to take the abuse. Want to upgrade to a match trigger...go for it. The lowers will accept any aftermarket parts an AR-15 does. They produce great barrels, also 1/8 twist, that will support light to heavy rounds.
If you want to dip your toe into the AR-15 platform purchase a DPMS for $750 and press. I have a couple and they are completely servicable rifles. I just purchased a DPMS rifle kit (I have a virgin lower on standby) for $550. To build a good, servicable, AR-15 for $625 is something that can be done these days. If you're interested in building (it's not difficult at all...I can provde a step-by-step manual provided through 3rd party) I would also suggest looking at PalmettoStateArmory's rifle kits. They carry FN hammer forged chrome lined barrels.

I would suggest Colt, I own three of them and they are great rifles, no issues with any of them and they are very accurate, BTW I also own 3 DPMS that are also good shooters ( .204 .308 and .223 ) all 3 have 24" stainless bull barrels and are very accurate but there is a big difference in quality ( finish, trigger, fitting, etc ) compared to the Colts, I don't care much for bushmaster based on my experience with the only one I own ( 20" fluted barrel ). I think Colt would be a good choice, a little more expensive than some other ones but very well worth it IMO.

The best rifle you can get for what you're looking for is an LMT Mrp piston gun, rock solid, great triggers, great stock, 1/7 twist for the heavier bullets, I have one love it... I also have the 300black out barrel for it, the quick change is perfect. The only problem with going piston 5.56 is you need to change the BCG to a gas version for almost every other caliber ie: 300blk out, .204ruger, 18in stainless 5.56

I'd go with an Knight's Armament SR-15. All major companies make a very similar product. Knight's actually tried to innovate and come out with new concepts and have proven to be good designs.

Hey every one!, thanks for all the input! i finaly settled with a colt, ar-15, ive had a complete blast with this one! i live in palisaid colorado, and a friend of mine coustom machined a upper for it, i belive both of you were right as far as the trigger making a differnce and the barrle as well, i now have a 24" 1-10 twist barrle and a lms two stage trigger, i went with a high dollar red dot, not a fan of it for longer shots, i now have a zise 5x22x54 scope long and short shots are clear as day, i also added a nice little ingraving on the side, COYOTE NO YOTE, i will try to get pictures up asap but once again thank you every one, and till next time yall have a beer and take er eazy.

My advice (since you are new to AR-15s), buy a good but chief stock one, like an RRA or on M&P, or a billion others. Use it and abuse it, and then design exactly what you want into a custom high end.
