I own a .30 cal Omega suppressor for my center fire rifles that I use on .223 up to .308. Since it's threaded 5/8" I've got a bushing for my AR carbine. I don't have any intentions on getting a .22 cal since that's the only .223 I own. I do have another AR that is more of a target type AR with an unthreaded med hvy bbl. Bbl is .880'' out to the gas block, then steps down to .740'' the rest of the way. I've taken this one apart and trued the receiver and was going to shim the bbl, so while I've got it apart I figured I might as well have the bbl threaded. Is there any downside to having it threaded 5/8" instead of 1/2"? I believe 1/2" is standard? But since I have plenty of bbl and if I buy another can it will be another .30, I thought I might as well go with 5/8". Dumb idea? Or go standard and bush it up like the carbine?

I was in this same boat a short while ago. I have a 30 cal direct thread can with 5/8-24 threads. I wanted a new barrel for my AR-15. I chose the 5/8-24 threads for the new barrel. I can thread my can on AND there are muzzle devices for AR-15 in the 5/8-24 because of the .300BO. There's also the large frame ARs using the 5/8-24. Just pay close attention to the minimum barrel OD spec for your can manufacturer.

It really comes down to do you want to use the thread adapter?

No downside, I started making 5.56 barrels with 5/8 threads around 2009 after finding 11 out of 12 barrels with a swelled muzzle and poor accuracy. A .218" inspection pin should slide in the muzzle a .219 should not.
