I am considering buying or trading for a dedicated AR upper in 22lr that is match grade. And i mean tack driving. I would like for it to hold it's own against my 541T.
Any suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: AR 22lr upper

most AR uppper need High Velocity ammo for them to cycle properly. Most of that ammo even out of a 10/22 Target barrel is not what i would call TACKDRIVING. Most of my accurate shooting 10/22 stuff has been standard velocity or subsonic which i dont think would cycle well in a AR upper without a lot of modification to the spring tension on the conversion unit and also the spring on the hammer.

Re: AR 22lr upper

spikes, mine is awesome shoots great, sorry but i havent shot it for groups just yet.

i do know it holds a 6in plate at 50yds all day long with a 4moa aimpoint.

it comes with a green mountain barrel or you can upgrade to a lothar walter, i see now reason why it shouldnt shoot excellent

i am going to use mine in a 200yd 22lr match in june instead of my 10/22 so i have confidence in it

Re: AR 22lr upper

I hava good variety of 22 ammo from cb's to the hyper vel. with a lot of match stuff in between. I like an AR platform and just lookin to either building it or if a certain dedicated upper manufacturer has it is what I want.
I know you guys have a lot more experience than I do with this subject.

Re: AR 22lr upper

my buddy has a spikes upper with the lothar walther upgrades barrel. It likes federal bulk pack and the plated hollow point minimags. It will shoot between .8-1.5" groups at 50 yards using a Bushnell 3200 10x scope. At 100 yards its usually 4-6" groups. Its fun to shoot, a great trainer but not a tack driver. It will hold minute of man at 200 yards if its not real windy.

They are great to have, which is why i just bought one from spikes. Just dont expect them to hang will a CZ 452, or a 10/22 with upgraded target barrel. My buddy's will shoot Wolf Target around .5" at 50 yards but it will not cycle reliably.

Re: AR 22lr upper

If you are serious and don't mind spending some $, check out Compass Lake Engineering:

http://www.compasslake.com/22uppers.htm

I have one of their flat-top Service Rifle uppers and it is an excellent training tool for NRA Highpower competition. And it will drive tacks from the bench with a scope if you prefer that kind of shooting. Using reduced targets at 50 yards it shoots exactly the same as my WOA Service Rifle in .223 - same 20-shot scores within a point or few. Does not need high velocity ammo - mine shoots just fine with CCI Standard Velocity or cheap stuff, but is most accurate with SK Standard Plus.

Good luck,
Erik

Re: AR 22lr upper

At one point I did go down the dedicated upper road. Keep in mind the upper is a compromise so you can shoot the 22LR. Spikes uppers are top of the line, excellent customer service and fast turnaround if upper needs to go back for repairs.

Some uppers may require fine tuning to run the ammo that you are using. Reliability of a regular AR or 10/22 you may not find it with the dedicated upper.

For me my CZ 452 Varmint and my upgraded 10/22, they work, no fine tuning, they will shoot anything I feed into them, this works for me.

You will have a hard time if you are looking for a tack driver out of a dedicated upper.

Re: AR 22lr upper

A tack driver... I dont know... but sure it is a hell of fun & cheap!

I vote for Spikes and I greatly advise to go with a DEDICATED WHOLE RIFLE. Why? Cause you will need a reduced power hammer spring. In my book this is a handicap in a defense AR.

My AR-22LR is accurate enough for its intended purpose (minute of man cheap training rifle). I can shoot prone/bench 4" plates and off hand 8" plates @ 50yds all day long.

I have not found the regular power hammer spring to be an issue with my Spikes upper.

Just sayin.

Heres mine:

Not done up like the Spike's guns but I bet there isn't a Spike's upper out there that will outshoot it - with scope OR irons. I prefer irons...

Re: AR 22lr upper

My Spikes 22 upper is on a stock factory RRA lower with a standard strength spring and runs near flawlessly on most copper plated high velocity ammo. It's a real treat to shoot. Haven't done any "accuracy" testing but it rings 6 inch steel 100 yards and in every time with the Eotech and BUIS.

Re: AR 22lr upper

+1 for the Compass Lake upper. I have a match upper from them and it is a tack driver. It will shoot on par with my Anschutz when I feed it the right kind of ammo. It was kind of finicky at times and would get jammed up on a dirty chamber, but I sent it back to CLE and they upgraded the chamber to their newer specs and it feeds flawlessly and very accurately.
