Hey fellas,

My friend is getting into shooting at longer ranges after getting some trigger time on my. 308. He has made the decision to go with a semi-auto platform instead of a bolt action. I've got a very good knowledge base on bolt guns but ar-10's are not my strong points. I've been researching them pretty extensively trying to get him the best bang for his Buck. In my research I've found most reviews on dpms ranging from "I'd only use it as a boat anchor" to "it is the most accurate gas gun I've ever shot".

Rock rivers down fall appears to be the magazines since they use fal mags. Are their companies producing quality fal mags?

I know nothing about armalites ar-10 except all the stuff reads buy it because they made it first. This statement means nothing to me in terms of accuracy and durability.

He said he only wants to spend about $1500.00 on the rifle. He fell in love with my nightforce and plans on putting an identical one atop his rifle. Also will need a good 20MOA base. Open to all assistance. He doesn't care what name is stamped on the lower as long as the rifle will shoot. I'd like to get him a rifle capable of 3/4 moa. This is better than he can shoot at the moment but as he improves I don't want him to suffer.
Hope we get some good info ty in advance.

Re: ar 308 system

For his budget DPMS is about a good as it is going to get. When it comes to factory gas guns DPMS does offer decent value for the money. However it does lack in QC at times. I had get my upper replaced due to the first one being out of spec. But mine does shoot well and any DPMS can be made to shoot well, it just might take some work.

On the magazine issue I like the DPMS/KAC pattern best due to PMAGS being available. Some DPMS rifles a picky when it comes to magazines, mine is, but PMAGS seem to correct the problem and feed with no issue.

Re: ar 308 system

Second the DPMS Budget way. I have a 24" LR308 DPMS upper, which I bought for $650, on a POF lower ($429), LPK ($60) and a Bill Springfield Trigger job ($70?, I can't remember, but it was worth the money as it brought the trigger pull down to 4 lbs.) All my stock triggers go to him. I used an LMT Stock, buffer, spring and Grip from my MWS that I had laying around, but you can find them for cheap online. Shoots really tight groups, and its rocking a Simmons $100 white tail 6.5-20, with a Bobro mount. You can go with a cheaper lower(I decided not to finish my POF build at the time) and come in well under budget.

And PMAGS all the way.

Re: ar 308 system

How about building one? The list below is what I'm gathering up for my ar 308 build.

Hogan Builders Kits (POF marked; consist of upper, lower and handgaurd) - $550 in hide's GB section
DPMS SASS Barrel - $190 @ JSE surplus
DPMS Bolt - $210 @ JSE
DPMS micro gas block - $20 @ DPMS
DPMS gas tube + roll pin - $15 midway
RRA NM AR-15 LPK - $110 gunbroker
Magpul PMAG - $20 anywhere
MOE Stock - $60
BUffer tube, buffer, buffer spring - $65 midway

Sniper central reported the DPMS LRT-SASS they had was able to shoot .5-75 MOA, so I'm hoping my build would be able to do that too.

Re: ar 308 system

Hmmm, I have owned, wanted, shot, and read about Armalites for about 15 yrs now and never not one time have I ever heard someone say "get an Armalite because they built the first one". There are many reasons, the least of which is that. Good luck w/ whatever you get.

okie

Re: ar 308 system

I'm not against building one. I've built a few ar-15s but I've never actually installed a barrel. Does this require head spacing?. I'm assuming it does. I've installed everything except a barrel. Always had rock river do it since they are a short drive from my place.

Re: ar 308 system

I'll third the recommendation of DPMS as a solid and affordable semi auto .308 platform. I too did the research and read many of the comments about their questionable QA, but have been extremely pleased with my LR-308. Mine is a solid .75-1.0 MOA shooter. Of all the available options and upgrades I would strongly recommend swapping out the stock trigger for either a JP or Giselle. The platform does have the added bonus of utilizing PMags which are affordable, reliable, and readily available.

If you are thinking about building a rifle give serious consideration the the Mega Machine billet upper/lowers. I think several folks are still offering group buys on them.

Re: ar 308 system

Thanks for the help guys. Do you crimp your handloads for 308 in gas guns? I crimp all my 5.56 but I use rcbs comp dies for 308. Just wondering if he needs to get his own dies so he can crimp. My seating depth is set at 2.805" so I think they should fit in the mags too.

Re: ar 308 system

I've run .0015 to .002 neck tension with no crimp for years through an AR10T with no setback problems. I used to check them periodicly but since I never found a single problem, I finally quit checking.

Re: ar 308 system

I don't crimp the bullets. I adjust the expander ball to give a wee bit more neck tension. I find that neck tension gives me more consistent results than a crimp does. With a crimp, case length makes a larger difference in the amount of tension that is applied to the case neck. That additional or lesser tension causes pressures to be more erratic than the results I get by adjusting neck tension via the expander ball. By using my expander ball technique, I get lower spreads in velocity.

However, if I was running the ammo through a full auto weapon, I would probably opt for a good crimp.
