I need to setup a precision AR with the right mount for my correct cheekweld. My bolt guns are set up for me and when my friends shoot them they have trouble getting low enough into my scopes. (just a little background)

With that said I have another AR with a 1" scope (tube), riser, and .75" rings which puts the centerline at 1.225 above the rail. This is perfect for this AR because its mostly shot from positions other than prone.

For the new AR I would like to get it just a tad lower because it will mainly be shot from the prone. The lowest combo of riser/rings I have found is a Badger riser and Seekins 30mm low .82" which will put the scope at 1.25 above the rail.

I have also found the Nightforce 1 piece mount that is 1.125" above the rail. So finally to my question. Do I go with the NF? I am afraid it will be too low. How much difference will .10" make in the grand scheme of things from my current AR to the NF mount? Not trying to make too big a deal from this I just want to order the right setup the first time.

    Thanks.

How comfortable it would be for you is something nobody can answer...

Take your AR with 1.225" rings, make a temporary cheek-riser made out of a few layers of duct tape that's 0.100" thick, and test it on that AR.

What I can say is at least for me, even 0.080" of optic height makes a difference cause I've used 1.00" Badger and 0.92" Seekins on the same rifle.

Like you a lot of shooters can't use my rifles how they're set up because my cheek bones are higher than theirs. Quarter turn on the PRS on my AR is usually necessary for them to shoot comfortably, and is why I run a taller mount with the adjustable cheek piece.

The temporary stock riser Hamstur suggested is a good way to make sure the height you want before dropping the coin too. Break out the caliper and I would use layers of paper with tape holding it in place, not layers of duct tape that have additional give when you acquire proper cheek weld.

I found a mousepad that was .10 thick so I taped it to the stock and I have been dry firing all day with that. It looks like it will work well so I am going to go with the NF low mount.

I had considered getting a PRS for the adjust-ability but I really want to keep a 6 position stock on this gun. Going with the new ACS-L for that.

Glad you were able to solve your dilemma overnight!

I am a little surprised at the low centerline you are suggesting. My understanding is 1.47" is the centerline on a mil-spec AR with iron sights. This, plus your stock determine cheek weld. Are you saying you don't like that? This is how all the Eotech, Aimpoint, ACOG and the famous LaRue LT-104 are set up--i.e. to co-witness that iron sight. On my N4 w/ACOG, the buttstock sits up a little in the pit of the shoulder and the comb is snug under my cheekbone. If I mounted any lower, the comb would cut across my cheekbone and the butt would not be tight against the shoulder.

Here is a the ultimate link to AR-15 mounts, hope it helps:

By the way, I also use Vltor CAR stocks. They come with detachable battery compartments that act as a bit of a cheek riser.

I had a PRS and sold it.

Yes that is what I am saying. I have owned 3 LT104's, an LT158, I still have their mini acog mount but I can remember the number. I know it sounds crazy but all the standard mounts are way too high for me. The acog mount is doable because of the way I shoot that gun and I am more concerned with speed.

When my buddies shoot my bolt guns I have to take off my stock packs to make it even managable for them. I guess I have high cheek bones. [shrug]

    Ok, I get it.

IOR makes 30mm and 35mm rings. Their medium is 0.50" and high is 0.75". SWFA sells these on their website.

I guess I could have just said that the first time...

Re: AR guys I need help with scope setup.

I understand the high cheek bones thing. Most people can't mount my bolt guns because the cheek pieces are setup for me.

The LT-158 is pretty darn low (It's lower than the normal Larue mounts) and I still run the PRS cheek piece up high (On my AR-10T). Still the PRS sit a bit too far back, so I don't totally reap it's benefits for raising my cheek fully. I could go lower on the scope mount, but unless the scope had a smaller that 50mm objective, it would run close to touching my top rail.

Here you can see how a 56mm objective is super close to that rail. I can barely fit the bikini cover on.

Something to think about in regards to low mounts.
