AR help

hi everyone, i first must say i am new to this site and to the ar-15 world.i need your help. i have done some internet search but can not find really what i am looking for. so here is my question: i am building a an ar-15 from a dpms striped lower and parts kit that was gave to me by a friend. the gun will be a do all gun. it will be used for varmint control along with 600 yards plus paper punching. do not need it as a self protection gun. (1) do i need a heavy barrel and why? will a standard barrel be find? (2) i am looking at 20"-24" barrels, what will suit me best?

what i am looking at is a 20" standard kit with a fluted stainless 1:8 twist rifle kit from model 1 sales.

i reloaod so i might get in to shooting the heavy gr rounds, not sure right now.

so what do you think?

First, understand there is no "do all" gun, they're all a compromise of some sort.The only reason you'd need a heavy barrel is for high volume fire,it will take longer to get hot thus allows more shooting until you have to let it cool.It's also stiffer so MAY be more accurate ala bench shooting.Note I said MAY, as a cheap heavy barrel will not out shoot a top tier lighter barrel.Downside is that they suck to field or carry much.Flutes help, but only slightly.For your purpose if you have to carry at all get the 24" mid weight,longer barrel will give higher velocity at the ranges you want to shoot.If you are gonna walk 5 yds from your truck to where you shoot, get a 24" bull barrel with flutes.Either way get a stainless pipe,1:8 twist is a good compromise for 40 gr to 69 gr and may be ok with 75 gr pills for longer ranges.Make sure you get the 5.56 chamber,I have a Model 1 24" fluted bull 1:9, and it's a hammer.Good luck!

will there be that much difference in a 24" and a 20" barrel. i might carry it some so a sporter is what i need.

Stainless 1:8 18" gov't profile with a good free float tube will do you fine.
We compete and yote hunt out here out to 700 just fine with up to 77gr SMK's with such.

I'd recommend a Wylde chamber over a 556 chamber personally.....

18 inch stainless barrel is the way to go. No benefit to a bull barrel over a heavy barrel. I can shoot out to 700yds with my 18" barrel and get a 6-8 inch group with no wind of course. 500yds and in is under MOA.

My version of a AR one gun is this, not perfect but it can do alot.

Standard lower(Grizzly) CMT lower parts kit, mil-spec ext and LMT/Crane stock.
Daniel Defense upper with a Bravo Co midlength chrome lined, 1n7, Vltor block, pinned by ADCO, Daniel Defense 12" Lite rail and a FSC556 Flash hider/brake. Optic is a Night Force 1-4(CQB reticle)with a Larue 1.93 mount(like it higher for quickness)Back ups are a Troy set. I have a little pictogram on the scope for hold overs to 500,no issues wth 55gr ball wacking the 12x12 steel, 600 is tricky since I have to hold way over with no reticle reference.
