Fellas i dont know much about AR rifles but i am thinking i may get one in a varmint configuration for long range (600 Yards) steel plate/ coyote shooting. Who is offering the most accurate factory or semi factory AR varmint rifle for the money right now? I am thinking Rock River at this time as they are offering free shipping and a scope mount, or something like that? Any others? thanks men! Lee

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I have a Rock River varmint. I am very happy with the rifle. I did upgrade to a Geissele DM trigger, but the NM RR trigger is decent if you do not want to spend the $$

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I'm using a RRA Varmint 24" bull barrel. Easily groups about 1/2-3/4" groups. Only thing is with a 50mm scope it weighs about 11 lb. If you are going to carry it far you might want to be thinking 20 inch barrel

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I have the RRA 20" Varmint with a NF 3.5-15x50 with a Magpul PRS - it's about 11 lbs. I get 3/4" grps at 100 (factory ammo). I love it.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

Here is my rig that does exactly what you want to do, and does it well... except I cant get the coyotes to cooperate this year yet.
Armalite M-15 A4(T)
SWFA SS 10x42
Don't skimp on the finish work... include some rattle can Krylon in your budget.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I've had the RRA 24" Varminter for about 10 years. It has over 4000 rounds through it and is still a sub moa rifle. I have had zero problems and have taken literly thousands of Prairie Dogs with it.

RRA predator pursuit is more like a lighter bull profile. The RRA NM stainless, RRA Coyote have more of an HBAR profile to them.

I would stick to the 18-20" stainless 1:8 bull profile RRA uppers. My 20" bull was bought used with a round count of "500" and probably has 2k through it total with no signs of losing accuracy.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

Nice thing about AR's is you can tailor them to specific uses by changing uppers. My yote AR is a Cav. arms lower, 20" 1 in 7 twist upper with a 2-7 Kahles scope with TDS reticle. Only weighs 7lb. with bi-pod. Gets me out to 600 on the pesky varmints.
For the PD's I change the upper to a 24" 1 in 8 twist that pushes 80 gr. SMK's at 2800. Really reaches out there, also shoots 69 and 77 SMK's very well.

Scottmilk9 here is a good friend, a hide sponsor, a contributor to precision rifle shooting sports and predator huntin as a sport.
He also makes great varmint and precision AR's. Never seen one not hold sub moa with decent ammo and you get personal service and a custom AR for a great price.

Click the SpecializedDynamics banner in my signature and give him a call-it'd be worth your while!!

Check his rep at PredatorMasters too....

+1 had a 26 inch match upper for about 5 minutes before I decided to sell it............Way too heavy. H-Bar is a great compromise. IMHO

Good luck

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I also have a 20 inch Bull Barreled AR. I have taken it Yote hunting once and it is wayyyyyy too heavy for a carry gun. The bull barreled AR's get heavy quick when you put bipods, scopes, risers....and all the other stuff on them.

That being said, I also use the same gun for a "backup" gun while prairie dog hunting. I would not go under a 20" bull barrel for that. The extra weight lets you see hits and gets you back on target for a 2nd short, or third, or 4th before they all get down the hole. We shoot off of quads while prairie dog hunting and sometimes I wish that I had a 24" bull barrel for even more weight and velocity.

That is the nice thing about AR's, you can set one up exactly how you want it. I also have a Superior Arms 20" Bull barrel and it will shoot 3/4 MOA all day long with whatever kind of bullets I feed it. I bought it because they are made here in Iowa by 2 older gentlemen that quit working for Rock River because they thought RR's attention to detail was starting to slip. Now, I am not knocking RR. I think they are great. I just built a RR lower that I put a 6.5 Grendel upper on. I am just letting you know a little history of how Superior Arms got started.

Now, for a Varmint Rig I don't see how you can go wrong with an AR in .204 Ruger. They just flat out shoot. I don't have one in an AR yet, but I have 2 custom Savages with custom Pac-Nor barrels in .204 and so far my longest hit on a Prairie Poodle is 565 yards on our last trip out to South Dakota. Every year I get a new personal best. The .204 isn't that much more to reload for, just a couple extra grains of powder per round. I don't know if the .204 shooting a 40gr V-max would DRT a yote at 600 yards, but i know it blows a Prairie dog in half. I think the largest grain bullet for the .204 is a 50gr soft point. But how many shots will you be taking on yotes out at 600 yards...??? I know guys that have taken many yotes with a .204 out to 450 with no problems. How can you not like a 40gr bullet going 3950fps.... or a 32gr bullet going 4250 fps. LOVE IT.

The most important things in an AR are a good barrel and a good trigger. Like other have stated the RR Match trigger is a good trigger. I have one and like it. But I have a standard RR trigger on my Grendel right now and I only put it in because I bought the standard RR lower parts kit knowing that someday I would upgrade it to a Geissele.

Take my opinions with a grain of salt. You can't go wrong with any AR for varmint hunting. It is just what you like and how you are going to use/hunt with it. Just giving you some options to look at. Let us know what you decide, or if you have any extra questions all you have to do is PM me.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

If i buy am AR it will be more for fun than a main go to coyote rifle. Even though i do believe that the AR platform is the absolute best coyote rifle money can buy. I am thinking 24" just to shoot prone with. I could probably see my hits at 600 yards with that heavy of a rifle. I havent had an AR for a few years now so i didnt know who was the current leader in accuracy for a factory offering. Last time i checked into an AR varmint rifle, stag arms was getting great reviews. I also had an Armalit 24" varmint (the green one) and it shot pretty good! I am a bolt rifle kinda guy but i do think an AR would be nice to have. thanks for all the info! lee

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

Well then if that is the case and you are wanting a long range AR more for the fun of it..... 6.5 Grendel would hit steel twice as far as you are wanting. They have a very good selection of very high BC bullets. 107SMK, 108 & 123 Scenars, and the 123 AMax all are excellent bullets. I just got my Grendel and I took it out a couple of days ago when there was no wind and it got up to 30 degrees. It shot two 3/4" groups(minus the .264 bullet dia.) and I was pretty impressed. I am hoping to try a bunch of different recipies for it this summer, but I have a Hog Hunting trip coming up at the end of Feb. so I am sticking with the 123 Scenars and Amaxes that I have. The more I read up on it here on the Hide the more and more excited I get about it. If you would like the several good posts about it on here just PM and I will shoot them over to you to gander at.

Again....this is just another option.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

Here is my AR varmint rig:

LMT MRP

I also used it deer hunting this past year, just a simple barrel and bolt switch and it was a 6.8SPC. Kind of expensive but I will justify myself with the "buy once, cry once" method. I am also going to get the .204 barrel assembly soon to see how that works out. If everything goes as planned then I will have 3 rifles in one.

Re: AR Varmint rigs????

I was looking for something similar recently. I ended up buying a rock river varmint a4 18" I am please with it. But if you have the scratch a jp enterprises seems to be hard to argue with for an accurate ar for prone shooting- long range ar.
