I have one in the works as we speak, LR 308 receivers, a 14" FFT and a SOPMOD in the rear. I am having a hell of a time deciding on 16" or 18" to put on it. I'd like it to be light, but also get out to 6-800, and I' mthinking 18 might be my ticket, but for a truck gun to have around all the time, 16 is very attractive...

I agree...800 is a grip for a camp gun that rides in the truck and gets taken on long walks. I'd love to rock out with a SBR but I live in a state that ins't fond of fun. It is going to have to fill two roles though, an intermediate distance shooter and a practical/ portable rifle. I shot a match yesterday with a guy that had an 18" JP rifle and he was getting pretty dicey at 900 but made good hits at 8. Thats what got me thinking 18 over 16.

Got mine to around 11lbs. I can make it to 600 yards no problem with a 3.5x ACOG for 12" targets. Which for a combat gun offhand shooter is more than good enough. I just put a Rainer Match Barrel on it, and I think this gun is now a sub-MOA gun. Only reason I say I think is because at 100 yards I can't get a good POA with 3.5 mag and the triangle reticle. I get a better POA with a Eotech than the ACOG trianle believe it or not. Regardless, it is still no worse than 1.5 MOA with my custom semi-auto 175gr Reloads.

In the process of building a Lightweight AR 308 Carbine now. So far I have the lower built out using a Mega MA-Ten Ambi Lower with Geissele SD-E Trigger, Magpul CTR, POF 6-Position Buffer Tube, and Enidine Hydraulic buffer. Just ordered a ARP 16" Lightweight 1:11" 5R Barrel (1lbs 14oz) but backordered on a Mega MA-Ten MKM Extended Rifle Upper and JP Low Mass BCG.
Complete Lower weighs in at 2.5lbs and I estimated the Complete Upper (no optics) to weigh 4.5lbs. Planned effective range is 0-500yds.

Mines a hog. Probably 14-15lbs loaded, but she's a shooter! 18" Noveske N6. I plan to grab a 16" barrel with switchblock the next time I find 650$ laying around. Nothing at all wrong with a 16" barrel in .308.
These photos are the 2 best groups out of 5, 5 shot groups. I did 1 ten shot group as well. All at 100 yards with a 1-4 Trijicon Accupoint with the triangle reticle. I have since upgraded to a NF 3.5-15x50 NSX. I have shot it out to 650 with various ammo including M80 ball and hitting torso size steel is a piece of cake ($40 3x9 from wal mart).
These are the same target. I didn't have a way to measure so I used quarters as reference.

I've owned 5 different AR10's- 3 in .308 and 2 in .260 Rem. I was going to build a lightweight 16" gun until I got a 16" 6.5 Grendel. I have zero plans to do anything with a 16" .308 now (or anything .308 anymore, unless I find an original Dutch Armalite AR10 from half a century ago).
SCAR is more balanced, the 16" barrel does not feel like a 16" barrel, feels like an SBR. SCAR is also the softest recoiling .308 I have ever shot. Right now I would have to rank it the #1 semi auto as far as being a shooter goes.
Here are my buddies SCAR below. The SBR XCR and the pair of AR10's are mine.
The issue with SCAR-H's is that they are destroying optics. I love the lightweight and balance of them as well, but recently learned about the harmonic resonance problem they have that just rattles the trash out of optical instruments.
First time I have heard of this, but I actually can see it happening. All the recoil in the scar seems to be absorbed in the bolt area. Something is taking the recoil right? Since the Scope sits right above the bolt, I can see it taking a good amount of abuse.
That's why one should not put a wimpy S&B on SCAR. They should put a Tough ACOG! LOL ;-) [Setting up Trap]

I have two Sig 716s, one in 14 inch with a pinned brake and an aimpoint, the other was a 16 inch with a 1-4x on it. With the bipod/ADM mount, scope, offset iron backup sights and a loaded mag it was 11.8 lbs. I changed it yesterday to a NF 3.5-15x56 to get it out to 1,000 meters, but 700m was a walk in the park with the 1-4 and 800 was difficult only because I couldnt see the steel that well and ran out of elevation at 750m so it was all on the reticle. That was on 168 gr Amax, gonna push the GMM 175s for 1,000 this weekend or next. The 14 inch is just over 9 lbs and has only gone out to 600m with the 1-4x before I bought the black one and switched the scope over to it. Im sure it will have no problems going just as far, but I like having a "battle rifle" that punches through stuff 
If I could find a Sig 716 in 18 inch id buy it in a heartbeat and give the NF to it, then put the new leupold 1-6x on the 16 inch, but id be saving for a while for that one.
I think these days though, any of the new 308 ARs can punch out to 1,000 with the right ammo, skilled shooter and optics.

You could rebarrel your AR308 to 6.5 Creedmoor and shoot the 123gr 264's 500fps faster than in a Grendel. That's what I'm planning to do with my AR308 "Heavy"
I only own one large-frame AR now, and it's the GAP .260 Rem with 22" Bartlein pipe. It's a heavy gun that I can't shoot as well from positions as I can with the 16" Grendel, but it shoots like this from the bench or bipod at 100yds for 5rd groups:

I chose the .260 Rem over the 6.5 CM due to brass availability and case geometry compatibility with .308 magazines. Some guys with 6.5CM have had feeding issues, whereas the .260 Rem is nothing more than a .308 case necked down (has the same shoulder location and angle), so it works great from .308 mags.
Back to the OP topic with carbines. A carbine can be shot much better from positions, and I am working position shooting into my training a lot. If I were in charge of a rifle match, very few stages would include shooting from prone, unless the targets were beyond a certain distance in true long-range territory. What I see with typical rifle barrel profiles at matches is that even very talented shooters have a difficult time of holding the gun on target from positions, and more matches are incorporating position shooting to reflect reality.

I'm building a .308 carbine. My reason for building is 3-gun matches and hunting. My 18" LaRue OBR is too heavy to hump around while hunting and with the suppressor too heavy for offhand shooting.
Here's my build plan. Hoping for 11-13lbs loaded, suppressed, with optic. Hoping for 7-8lbs dry.

I have a GAP-10 being built right now. 18" finished length barrel including the Surefire brake. It should be pretty handy and shoot out to 800 with no problem.
I just got done shooting my 14.5" Noveske N6/ Armalite AR10. I'm shooting Sierra 175s and have my Surefire 7.62 Mini suppressor mounted. I had no problem shooting out to 500. I was getting first round hits from the data my Shooter I phone app predicted. At 6, 8, and 900 yards, the predicted data was a little too much. I did shoot it all the way out to 900 yards, 10.8 mils was my elevation for 900 (my 18" N6 is 8.5 mils). Wind was roughly 5-10 mph, half value which had me holding .5-1 mil.
I also have a Noveske N6 18", a 16" .308 Remington 700, and my duty SR25 with a 20" barrel. I would recommend going with the shortest barrel length you can. The velocity difference from 20" to 14.5" with 175s is about 100-150 FPS. As long as your scope can dial the elevation you will likely not see a big difference in the wind holds.

This is my first post = I just recently had Bison Armory make a AR in 308 for me with a MegaMaten monolithic upper and a Jp Enterprises supermatch barrel. It comes in in just under 10 pound with a MagPul PRS stock. I plan at some point to try a Vltor Emod stock at some point which will lighten it up about 14 ounces. This is a very accurate rifle and I plan to start reading here to figure out methods and devices to reach out beyond the 300 yards which is my top end right now.
My load is 41.5 grains of 4895 and 168 Berger VLDs - The target is 100 yards.

Something like this with NSR style tube, 2.5-10 NF and skinny tube/light can in 6,5CM is what I've been thinking. Wondering if it can realistically get close to as light as a simple, basic AR15 carbine
