AR10 shooters, chime in...

I've owned AR's for a while, including 9mm, 5.56, and .300 Whisper variants. Well, today I took the plunge and picked up an Armalite 20" AR10. It's my first .308 on an AR platform, and I am ready to get it to the range. I mounted a Sightron SIII 3.5-10x44 mil dot in QRW rings, and I will be working up a load with 168gr Hornady BTHP's.

So, how finicky are these guns, and do they tend to shoot fairly well? Mine came set up with a ARMS S.I.R rail and 7 magazines, so I shouldn't have to buy anything for it right now (other than a new grip).

Shoots a repeatable 1/2 MoA, with handloads, if I do my part. I'm running 168 gr Hornady HPBT Match or Amax over 43.0 gr Varget.

The trigger makes a big difference. Also, trigger control and follow through are very important when trying to squeeze accuracy out of a semi auto. Your setup is capable of being accurate, but it takes practice.

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

how many grains of varget and what is the case overall length...thanks

i've had very good results with the 155 amax using varget. i get roughly 1/2 moa when i do my part.

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

i have been using 45.0 gr varget with the 155 amax, win brass, loaded to mag length. my gun really likes this load but i will try to find a lower node as i am getting some cratered primers and this load will probably be too hot in the summer months.

the factory trigger was pretty bad, i put a jewell trigger in mine.

Here's mine. Its the AR10-T target model with the 20" SS handlapped barrel. I just got my Premier 3-15X50 last week and have only got to the range once. I shot some handloads with 45.5gr Varget and 168gr BTHP's. This load has been OK in a bolt gun I have but the AR10 chamber must be a little tighter because the primers were pretty flat and the recoil seemed excessive.

I'd call that a hot load. I run 43.0 Varget with 168 gr BTHP, in a 18" barrel. I get about 2650 fps.

I beleive the load maxes out at 45 gr, maybe even 44 gr... can't remember which.

I beleive the flattened primers / recoil are due to too much powder, especially in a barrel that long.

I'd be real careful....

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

Yeah. Book max is listed as 46.0gr at 2.800" and I loaded them to 2.815". So I was surprised to see the primers showing pressure signs. The brass was LC match which usually runs a little hotter than Fed but I didn't think it would be as hot as it was. I intend to use IMR4895 as my main powder in the future cause I think the faster powder will cycle smoother.

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

Thanks for the pics. I won't be able to load for mine until the weekend, but I am going to try Varget, TAC, and both flavors of 4895 behind 168gr Hornady bullets.

The trigger in mine is a 2 stage, and is basically the same trigger pull that's in my 20" SPR 5.56 build. Its no where near as good as my Savage and Rem bolt guns, but nothing like a stock AR!

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

I am about to have my first AR10 build together. I have had a couple factory AR10s but this is my first build. Well sort of a build.

I have an Armalite lower with the NM trigger. I added a Vltor Modstock, (just because I like them and I had an extra one) and an SPR grip.

I bought a new Noveske N6 18" Stainless upper and it should arrive tomorrow. I have an extra MKIV 3.5-10x40 that I think will work well for now.

Should have pictures in a couple days. Hopefully from the range.

Re: AR10 shooters, chime in...

Mt armalight shoots great had for years, kills yoties & hogs great (155gr amax/ 44gr varget) groups well & puts gaint holes in unwanted varments (not so good if you want the hide)
