can an AR function without a buffer system of some sort? I’m not talking single shot...can it run as a repeater without a spring/plug or piston type assembly in the buffer tube? trying to settle an argument.

also, would the Bolt and carrier even stay in battery with an empty buffer tube? If you fired the rifle I’m guessing the carrier would rocket out the back of the buffer tube

    Yes, yes it can...

I would contest that this is not an AR15. Just because it uses an AR15 lower does not make it an ar15. Is a bolt action on an AR10 lower an AR10?

You can "FIRE" an AR15 without a buffer/buffer tube/spring exactly one time.... You arent firing another round like that though.... Actually, the LAW Tactical folder says it can be fired from the folded position... Never tried it on my 2, and I see it being very rough on the folder detent that holds the BCG from falling out, but you can pull the trigger that one time and it will fire.......

According to the ATF, the lower receiver IS the firearm. So yes, if the upper can mate to an AR-15 lower and create a working firearm, then the result IS an AR-15.

When I don't wake up tomorrow because I had a brain aneurysm sometime in the next 12 hours, it will be because I read this thread. "If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college."

How about the Olympic arms OA series? They sure made it work
Has a recoil a spring above the bolt, which therefore rules it out for the OP's question.

With a MCX or BRN180 style upper there is no need for a buffer since it's in the upper.
Buffer in the upper is still "a buffer system of some sort"

can an AR function without a buffer system of some sort?

Because I’m dealing with stubborn morons

Yup it will work great. Let them shoot it that way....

    you’ll have less stubborn morons

I suggest a Nickel Boron finish on the bolt carrier...it will collect less shit when it rockets from your shoulder out your ass

I took this as the OP is arguing with someone about removing the spring and buffer in a standard AR with standard parts. Which is why I perceived it as a joke.
