A couple of my Buddies and I were on our way back from the Ft Worth gun show last night. As usual the conversation was gun related. The subject was brought up about the machining on custom actions vs stock actions. I think all actions start life as a block of steel and are machined (CNC) out. My buddie thinks actions like Ruger 77 and a few others a precision casted. I don't see how this could work? Who is Right? Thank You krw

Some are "investment cased" , some are forged and some are cased other ways.
They are all finished machined to final dimentions

yes, most best ones are CNC from billet, the Ruger's start as lost wax casting then CNC machined.

This repsonse implies that fully machining a part from billet creates the highest quality and best part, which is not necessarily the case.
In most cases, beginning with a forging produces a better part.
All the high-end custom actions are billet, however, because it is inexpensive to acquire/use the machinery required to make billet parts, as compared to the machinery required to forge them.

PM = Powder Metallurgy. Press powdered metal into a part shape, originally with dies and a press (compacting), example might be a small gear. Can also have a little binder added and mold using a machine somewhat like a plastic injection molding machine, it is easire to make more complex parts. I've seen some medical parts made for surgical staplers done this way, this is called Metal Injection Molding or MIM. Then, sinter (heat) the part to fuse the the powder. More machine work may be done afterward if desired. Taurus does this on some parts. Cutting tool bits have been made with this process for years.
