So start with the absolute mechanical accuracy a service based sniper rifle is capable of with the issued ammunition, free of human hands, clamped in a holding device, zero wind, and run it out to the distances mentioned. I bet most would not come anywhere near to putting all rounds on a human torso sized target.
Now lets add in the human element and atmospherics. Can these guys somehow shoot 'inside' the absolute mechanical accuracy the weapon system is capable of?

I actually have an M24 and it shoots 1/2 moa with m118lr with no issues other than the occasional flyer due to velocity change. It's. 308/7.62. I bet it will hold accuracy out to where it transitions to subsonic and maybe a bit further. I used to own an M2HB as well, it was 87 pounds. When mounted on a sand bagged tripod it's practically artillery. Depending on the projectile it's supersonic until up to 2300 yds.
With a little luck it is possible to hit shit at long distance. In Hathcocks case, the VC guy happened to pop up very close to a bullet riddled stump he had used as a target. In Furlongs case, he walked in with several shots.
I used to occasionally shoot pistol with a guy named Zins who won a dozen national championships. He was on that old "Top Shot" show one season. My favorite quote from his 1000yd Barrett match was, It's called Top Shot, not first shot." He won by walking in a hit with 3 shots in maybe 5 seconds.
No doubt in my mind a Marine with national match experience could hit people at over 2000 yds with a 50.
Here's a military sniper story that's true. One time, we all went out to the strip club and I was the DD. One guy that was getting married the next day got shit faced and fell in the pisser, busted his tooth through his upper lip, and I had to haul his drunk ass back to the base to see the doc. At the gate, I get pulled in for suspicion of DUI because of the reeking smell coming out of my truck cab. I blow .00, chew boot MP's ass in front of his boot 2LT for wasting my fucking time, get back to barracks just in time to field day my room, get dressed in service Alphas, inspect my platoon's rooms before the SgtMaj comes through and know we're going to catch hell, we get asses chewed for shitty field day and smelling like brewery, then we get to police call the quad in our shiny shoes all afternoon.

Rinse and repeat a variation of an adventure like that every week.

Read some of Gary Yee's books.
He has researched thoroughly including interviewing veterans and getting extensive documentation on actions all the way back to the Revolutionary War.
His WW2 book is a masterpiece of research and totally worth reading.
Also Martin Pegler's 'Out of Nowhere' is very good. Another serious historian and gifted researchers. Also was the head curator of the Royal Armouries at Leeds. Wonderful gentleman and historian.
So... yeah. Plenty are true. Just have to weed out the Internet chaff from the well-documented wheat.
I hear somebody has done a great paper and talk on confederate guerilla Jack Hinson recently... and confirming a lot of the materials from Col. McKenney's outstanding book One Man War. But I may be mistaken on that one ;-)

If you want to read his book, "Marine Sniper" is a good read. I just want to know if he actually did crawl prone, however many hundreds of yards, through an open field, take a single shot at some VC officer and prone crawl back undetected, while almost getting stepped on. That was a wild story. Perhaps if we meet him on the heavenly side, he can confirm it or not. Time will tell.
Remember tall military stories (w/no awards ceremony) are used to push a narrative, aka raise morale, fill the ranks, and demoralize the enemy. That tactic is as old as war its self. When the enemy places a bounty on someones head its because they're good at what they do, but remember the running casualty of war is the truth. Long ago unless the AAR was signed by all involved you could bet your ass it included some B/S. If there were no wit's to the event or collaboration from the enemy that X was________________ at X a/o, that persons off field demeanor was also used to determine truthfulness level.

I've put ~ 10K rounds through an M2, mounted in a turret cradle, with a 7x day optic (M36E3, and later the M36E3 TSS). I've also shot more than a few cans' worth from the M3 tripod that was ground mounted. And I've PSO, RSO, qualified enough dudes in my career that I've probably watched 100K .50cal rounds go downrange...albeit most were fired in bursts of automatic fire.
No way is that system better than 3 MOA *when used as a single shot* with military ammo (ever)...so by the time you factor in inconsistencies in ammunition, the beaten zone at nearly a mile and a half is massive. Bicycle tires and headshots are not point targets for that system at 1/3 the distance claimed. It becomes an area weapon well before that.
I'm not shitting on Carlos' abilities as a match shooter. I'm just merely stating that calling any shot at that distance (let alone multiple times) is pure bullshit. It is the equivalent of calling a bullseye in darts - then throwing it from a pitcher's mound to home plate.
There there were the two times the 'through the scope' shot was attempted to be replicated and failed...unless you're shooting AP ammo at a rock throwing distance.

Yeah little boy used the rifle barrel configuration. But did it shoot through a scope? Did it shoot someone impossibly far away? It did not.

He told a few of us the true story on the "Hamburger" as he called them. He shot at him while he was bent over, filling a canteen, in flight, he stood up and was hit. As Gunny explained it--he technically missed as if the kid didn't stand, the bullet would have sailed over him. This was 1993 in Va. Beach at the Creeds Training Facility. I have others as well.

Here's my real reply to this thread. I'll start right off with nobody in this conversation were there, so nobody in this thread knows either way. I wasn't there, I have no clue what's true, what's gray, or what's outright bullshit on the big stories. Quite frankly, I don't care either.
GySgt Hathcock could have taken the "easy tour" MP life on an airbase in Vietnam, yet he volunteered to help stand up a Scout Sniper unit, helped establish its selection and training regimen, helped establish its armory standards, helped develop the tactics and employment standards, and still went out into the jungle with a five shot capacity bolt action rifle to stack more enemy bodies than every single person in the Bear Pit has done with a scoped rifle combined. Later, he went for another go-around in Vietnam, stacked more bodies, got blown the fuck up and still helped rescue wounded while he was literally on fire, and went through severe burn injury recovery to go back to full duty versus taking the medical retirement he very rightfully deserved. Then he helped establish a permanent USMC Scout Sniper School that led the world in Sniper training and existed until wokeness took down his beloved Corps, all to finally get to deal with multiple sclerosis that made him have to finally hang up the ghillie.
That's all fact, historically documented, and proven. Personally, I find that all pretty fucking incredible. I don't care about what someone else wrote about him in a book (it wasn't an autobiography), what tales were told around the bar at Maggies, or any of the rest. The man is a legend, cut and dry, and he earned that status through pain, suffering, diligence and discipline.
You guys discuss the accuracy of an M2 or penetration possibilities through a rifle scope, I'll just keep respecting the man who actually did an exponentially amount more for the craft than anyone else in history. Only Maj Land comes close.
