Rifle Scopes Are lens caps created equal????

Is there a real difference in lens caps? There is a tremendous difference in price. I only have experience with Tennabrax.

What I'm trying to find out is one cap as good as another? why such a spread in the prices? Are Tennabrax as good as any other?

Butler Creek are noted to be fragile when roughly handled in competitive settings- shoving through tight spaces, etc. Many report breakages, though I haven’t had those problems, yet. Vortex defender caps have a tendency to pop off of an optic instead of opening. I’ve seen that myself. I have modified those to open easier, and have gone to running a strip of electrical tape around the cap, taping them to the scope. This remedies the problem. Yes, caps are made to different standards. Some are better than others. I don’t have any experience with tennebrax or aadland.

I take Vortex over Buttler Creek any day. But yes on some optics the Vortex caps can slide off when you try to open them depending how snug the fit on the objective is.

I also really like the Leupold Alumina caps, though I'm concerned they would be fragile in a comp. On a hunting gun, they are awesome.

Buy a set of Aadland/Aadmounts, try them out, then come back and tell us of your experience. They're the only caps I'll use.

I've had Tenebraex, Aadmount, Butler Creek and factory Steiner caps.

The Aadmount objective caps and Tenebraex ocular caps were the best. The opening button on the Aadmount ocular caps are too easy to depress and come open a lot when carrying the rifle.

I have the Vortex Defender caps and think they are pretty good for the price. No problems and sized correctly they are not fragile or do they slide off easily.

Carry/hunting the Tanabreax Ocular not having a push button makes it slightly harder to pop open but I'll take the Aadmount foe the objective every day

They fall off the AMG and they ship with the scope. I will agree that they do work pretty good on some scopes without modification. The trick is to flick them open quickly and they wont slide off.

Instead of taping them to the scope, put a wrap of electrical tape around the scope first and then put the caps over that.

Aluminas are superior to everything if you have a scope they fit.

I run them on my Mark 5 for matches. Flip and fold flat to the scope. I've broken every other cover I've ever tried that didn't fold flat.

Aadaland would be my next go-to in a non-Leupold scope.

Aadland are the best but they are pricey. I do also like the Tenebraex caps but they are not Aadland. I use the Tenebraex on my NF 7-35 because the entire cap rotates when the magnification changes and the Tenebraex allow me to move the cap out of the way
All my other scopes use Aadland

Depends on where you shot. On the glorious sections of BLM land I'm lucky enough to shoot on you most definitely want something to keep the dust out that shit gets everywhere.

I totally thought that. Until I hunted light rain and was wondering what those all those black spots were when looking through my scope.

Turns out that they were water droplets on the eyepiece lens. D’oh! Once the eyepiece, especially, gets all wet you’ll have a devil of a time getting/keeping it dry, and without caps or a cover, forget it.

So now I am making sure I have scope caps or a some sort of scope cover when I hunt.

And yeah, the Leupold Alumina ones rock. For non-Leupold scopes I’m going to try Aadland and a scope coat type cover to see how it goes.

I've shot some matches in the rain and the best solution I saw people using was chamois material. The real leather stuff you buy to dry your car. Cut a few square inches out and throw it in your bag. Even if you use scope caps, your lenses are going to get wet when you have to use your scope.

I’m going to try that! Good idea.

When I was out, it was in between a light mist/starting to snow, so if I kept my rifle level, the optics didn’t get (very) wet. And caps/cover would’ve really helped when I pointed the barrel up (sling) or down.

If it’s really raining, I’m going to shelter. I’m not that Rambo.

Side note: I found out that if your rifle isn’t stainless, take it out of the stock ASAP and wipe it down. I thought I could go eat and then wipe down…wrong! That rust starts fast…I was at dinner for only about three hrs. Noob mistake. If it looks like rain/snow, next time I’m oiling that thing up, as I swear bluing is only a quarter step more rust resistant than mill-scale mild steel.

The stainless that Tikka uses (or used a few years ago anyways) will rust pretty quickly as well. I like to use a wax type preservative such as Rennaissance wax especially in areas that I'm not going to be oiling often. It seems to last practically forever as long as you aren't touching it.

And if stainless rusts, it isn’t very good stainless. I know there’s a bunch of types of stainless, all with different advantages. I would think there’s a very rust-resistant stainless that is also is good for guns.

I would use blue painter's tape before even a free set of butler creeks. They were awesome 20 years ago, but now are pure garbage. I bet they still sell tons based on name, and wipe their ass with the hard-earned money of the poorly informed.

Aadmounts are great, I have used many, have never broken one, but did lose one due to less-than-perfect fit. But it was an early one, and no issues since.

If you own safe queens, anything will do. If you run gear hard, pay for the good stuff.

Not all are created equally. The Tanns are the highest quality ones I have seen, good feel and fitment, strong reputability on flips back and forth, as well as a strong durability. However you are going to be paying more by a lot. Butlers are cheap and get the job done. That being said you are more than likely going to be replacing them within the next few months because that's what they are... Cheap... If you are looking for the best bang for buck and best quality for the price. The Vortex Defenders fit most scopes and have an awesome durability and clamping factor. Basically, Vortex Defender Caps are the best ones out there.
