ArmaLite AR 30 .338 lapua Question

Anything out there on the Armlite AR30 chambered in .338 Lapua?

I'm looking to get a pretty good new rifle for learning how to shoot (and experiment with reloading)to shoot long ranges. I want to get into the .338 Lapua cartridge and have been looking at a lot of firearms in the $4-5000 range. (Yes, I'll put almost as much into a decent scope, probably a Leupold.) All of a sudden I come across the Armlite AR30 chambered in a .338 Lapua for something a little less than $2000...(MOA less than 1...maybe that's it...)
What gives? Is this weapon good enough for a non-Navy SEAL like me? Can i use the money saved to but reloading dies,brass, etc. for this expensive round?

The Remington 338L model can be had for a little cheaper and the normal 700 upgrades will work on this stick.

Thanks Poke, Ben777 and SAS Sniper dudes. I appreciate your responses addressing my question related to the firearm. You hit the center of the target I posted.I hope others respond in a like manner....I'm looking to get everything I can on this firearm....kind hard to find one to try out for a few days before I commit funds.....

Also, yea, I'm with you Chickeneye......sure the .338 is a hit in all the shooter glamor magazines I'll call them these days...but not for beginners at long range (or any other type of) shooting....I've gone as far as I can with the 308...long range shooting to me is a learning experience...every time a shot is fired.....

Of course, this begs the question: How far have you gone with .308? And with what kind of accuracy? Just because you're new here doesn't mean you're new to shooting... and long-range shooting at that. So to help us help you... What say you?

338 Lapua Mag. is a Fantastic round but not for the faint of heart... or wallet. The ammo is expensive... at least the good stuff. And the rifles that shoot this round extremely accurately are expensive as well. I personally haven't heard outstanding accuracy reports from those who own the sub-$2000 338LM rifles yet but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. You might be disappointed in the accuracy of the Armalite. FWIW

My shooting partner bought an Armalite AR30 in 300wm, Now I know it's not a 338lm but I will say that the AR30 (to this point) has been a diamond in the rough. IMR-7828 w/175smks has shot less than 1/2moa @ 500yds with less than 50 rounds of testing done... will the 338lm do that?? I can't say, but at this point i'm quite impressed with the AR30 in 300wm...
On the Con side, the mag fit is odd, it has some wobble to it when loaded empty (not real desirable) but as soon as the mag is filled it fits much better (top round pushing against the bottom of the bolt), feeding is 100%, we've never had a jam or any other problem. Only the "Long Run" will tell if our preliminary findings will be on par, but as of right now it's been a great ivestment.

I was looking into their 308 model for shits-n-giggles a while ago. I forget who it was, but someone has a mod to accept standard ar15 stocks

so a AR30, with a magpul PRS, would be a nice combo. The barrels are chrome lined lothar walthers, and the trigger is a Shilen Single stage, i believe.

They also come with the best recoil reducing muzzle break, thus far.

Well....I'm no Snipers hide master but I can promise you I have fired many 1/2 MOA groups with my Armilite AR30 In 338 Lapua out to 300yds with handloads and as a matter of fact most of the factory ammo I tried was well under MOA. Recoil with the brake is a not a problem at all.

The comment of a lesser expensive rifle not being capable of achieving this type of accuracy is simply untrue!

The biggest problem I have with it it's just not really practical to carry around. But from the bench it will out shoot most who put there hands on it!

I have the REM MLR in 338 as well and it seems like its gonna be a shooter too, You might wanna give it a try, A little more practical in my opinion.

i gotcha, i just misunderstood your post. i misread it as you were completely new to shooting/long range. if youve taken the .308 out to the limits then i say have at the .338.

ive actually considered getting an ar30 in 300WM, ive seen some go for some pretty decent prices.

Uuhh yeah.

Also if you have taken a .308 as far as it will go then you must be pretty good at LR shooting, therefore what are you trying to learn on a .338 for?

I have an ar-30 in the 300win mag (And yes i know he was asking about the 338) and it is an awsome rifle. I have shot 1/4in groups at 100 yards with reloads. I like the gun so much i think im going to buy the 338L version of it.

My old roomate had an AR30 in .338LM it would do under 1moa with factory ammo no problem, altho the gun would outshoot him. My Ar50 will do .8moa with factory ammo also, loaded with the 750Amax. So far i have been very impressed with armalite bolt guns.

I'm sorry if it sounded like I was saying a less expensive 338Lm was definitely less accurate. I really don't know. I was saying I hadn't <span style="font-weight: bold">heard</span> any reports of them being exceptionally accurate. My bad...

I've got the ar-30 and it shoots half moa or better at 800 yards with hornady 250hpbt. I asked myself the same question when I purchased this rifle. Just make sure to put a good optics on it. Mine is the leopuld mark 4.

Thanks ActionPhyto69. At 1/2 MOA at 800 yards...this is a decent bit better than I'm getting with my 308...which I believe I have maxed out either rifle wise or skill wise...Hence,why I'm looking to step up to a potentially better rifle, a bit bigger cartridge w/better ballistics. I think I'll give it a go with this rifle (and some damn good optics to match, I hear you) and report back. Heck it's my time and my money I'm investing here that's also helping to support our domestic industry and all of our interests in firearms.
I appreciate the feedback from you and all others that replied to the "Question" I posed, rather than trying to play "detective" and sniff out a faker....like some did....Nuff said..

I have an AR50 and an AR30 in 300wm. I too am very pleased with it. It shoots fantastic! I was at the gunstore ordering it an my buddy was hounding me to get the 300 instead on the 338. I wanted the 338 but for the added cost of ammo I was on the fence. So I ordered the 300 and I am glad I did. It is a good bit cheaper to shoot and does great at 1000yds. I believe the 300 and 338 share the same mags. In the 300 you can load any bullets you want out to the rifling and they fit in the mag fine.
