Only Armalite can answer the "why" question on the addition of the F/A to their AR-10 models. It is a largely an unnecessary and unused feature on .308 ARs IMHO, but for whatever reason...it is on the newer model AR-10s (last 2yrs roughly) and it seems to be here to stay for the time being. Is it needed...not really. Is it "superior" to the "Old" design which didn't have an F/A...not really. I certainly wouldn't be in any hurry to "upgrade" my older, non-F/A equipped AR-10s! </div></div>
I heard it was required for their entry in the SASS contract. Afterwards, even though they didn't get the contract, they still had the forgings to make a FA upper so they put them to use.
