I have been looking at the Super SASS from Armalite and really considering ordering it soon. I had a few questions about it and perhaps the FN SCAR H. My first question is which seems to be more accurate? Another would be does anyone know if there could be any pmags for the armalite anytime soon? I am looking at a Mark 4 4.5-14x50mm LR/T M1 Illum. Reticle for the optics is there perhaps a better optic for the price tag give or take a few hundred dollars?
I would mostly be using this rifle for hunting and targets on my free time, but here in East Tennessee I don't get the wide open 500+ yard shots offen. However I would like the capability to if the situation presented itself.
I am a new person to the tactical rifle world so if anything sounds funny about what I ask my apology in advance, just trying to learn lol.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

I highly doubt there will be a polymer Armalite mag anytime soon. I think the SCAR-H uses its own proprietary mag too. Im sure the Armalite would be much more accurate, not sure how the SCAR will compare with a 16" barrel. I have no first hand experience, but I would put money the Armalite would out shoot the SCAR in accuracy. I own an AR10, I love it. Either one would suit you just fine out to 600yds.

As for optics, I really like Zeiss. I have the cheaper Conquest line with the Rapid-Z reticule, I have it on my Rem700P, just trying to find a good mount for my AR10 to swap it over. Great eye relief, clear glass, and about 3-400$ cheaper than Leupold MK4 if you shop around. Im no professional, Im just giving you another noob's 2 cents. The rest of the guys here are top notch, and know their shit.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

i think either would work fine at the ranges you said,. the Armalite would have better parts support though.

i own a AR-10,. i put a PH 3-15x50 Gen 2 mil-dot on mine,.. cant help on the optics but im sure others can.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

What about building your own? For 16-1700 you could build a nice armalite pattern rifle. Also if you are going to hunt with it consider weight, a 16" carbine setup with a lighter stock than the sass has and a lighter weight optic like a 2.5-8 leupie or 2-10 nightforce might be a better idea. The Super SASS I handled was (just like my dpms sass mixmaster) a fat pig.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

I bought a ArmaLite Super SASS early on and it has just been amazing so two years ago I bought a second one. I have a RRA .308 and a LMT .308 so I do have something to compare it to. I have a few friends that I used to shoot IPSC with and we now do a lot of varmint hunting. Each one bought a ArmaLite SASS after shooting mine.

Like one of the guys said, you will have great support as far as parts availability.

Good luck with your choice either way.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

If you got the money, go with Armalite. And if there is a problem, Armalite will fix it for as long as you own your gun. Or like BCP suggested, build your own. Thats I am doing, I bought a complete upper and stripped lower and have been going from there. The main thing that makes the SASS is the barrel.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

Go armalite, I shot my friends a few weeks ago, it impressed the hell out of me. I have been a hardcore LWRC REPR fan but that armalite shoots really well. I was shooting at a F-class target at 1000 yds and was firing 5 shots as fast as I could in the prone and all 5 shots landed in a vertical line straight up with the first shot in the 10 ring with a spread of 8 inches. 5 shots at 1000yds under 8 inches messing around. I was even using old military match ammo (168 at 2550fps lake city date stamped 1991) I am working up reloads for him so I will soon see the full potential. Oh yeah 4 shot group at a 100 yds was .33 MOA. What ever fairy dust they sprinkle over these things it sure works.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

Thanks for the info guys. Ya I'm going with the Armalite for sure now, I think I will stick to the SASS because of the barrel. After I get use to the layout and understand it better I may consider making one from the ground up.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

I'm an Armalite fan for sure. I built both of these for less than 2 grand each (less optics and bipod), and I think both will do anything any of those "others" will except a quick barrel change. The top one is a 20" with an IOR 3x18x42 and the second is a 16" (SASS barrel) with an Aimpoint. Both are easy sub moa guns with FGMM. With the IOR on the 16" it's good to 800yds.

If you've built an AR15 it's no different. If putting a lower together is too complicated you can buy it pre-built as well:

and

1550+shipping and FFL fees. That would leave you damn near a grand to play with over a brand new sass.

If I were in your place though I would really look for a 16" pof or lmt, knowing what I know now I think those rifles are the ones to beat in that price range.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

Any idea what the barrel life is on the sass barrel? I was wondering if it would be around 6000-8000 as a typical barrel? Seeing as to how the barrel is coated with ceramic would this make it last longer or not as long as a regular barrel? Thanks in advance guys you have helped alot with this lol

Re: Armalite Super SASS

Unless you are loading max or higher I don't see how you can wear out a 308 barrel. Most people I know who replace their 308 barrels do so because they are upgrading from factory -> custom or going with a different caliber and not because they wore the barrel out.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

Does anyone tried or know if you can have a Armalite style upper and a DPMS style lower?

I am thinking of building one of these up if I can build it cheaper than a SASS.

My thoughts are a ASA side charger upper with the Armalite SASS gas tube assembly/ras. Match barrel at 18inchs, and a POF lower.

What's your parts list for the lower one? </div></div>That build basically started with the barrel which is a 16" Armalite SASS barrel that's no longer available AFAIK. I believe they were made by Krieger and I got it from 762sass. It wasn't cheap. I glass beaded it, and It's on a trued Armalite upper receiver with Armalite BCG, SWS E1 mid length rail, EGW gas block and MI sights and has a Vortex FH. The lower receiver is an Aero Precision to be CA legal and IMO it's every bit as good as the Armalite or Noveske receivers. LPK was Armalite, Magpul trigger guard, trigger is a worked RR two stage (3.5#), oversized match pivot/TD pins, Hogue grip, VLTOR stock, Armalite crbine buffer and spring. Front sling adapter is an MI rail mount, sling is a VCAS with push buttons on both ends. Aimpoint M3 4moa on an ARMS mount. Also have a Harris for it. I'm still up in the air as to what glass to run on it. Was thinking of just getting another 3x18 IOR, but I'm also considering something a little smaller. I absolutely love this rifle.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

The reason I ask is that I have a 223 AR set up in a similar manner and am thinking I want a 308 like it. My 308 is pretty much a dpms sass clone with the same ior scope that you have, so it's fun to shoot off a bench and accurate but weighs a ton (~15 lbs without a mag, ugh). My goal is one that's 9 without mag or optics.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

That video of the suppressed SASS is cool. I have had an Armalite on order for a few months now. Hopefully won't take to long to get here.

Man I hope so I almost have enough saved up to order I'm just gonna hate the wait.

Re: Armalite Super SASS

The wait will kill you. I guarantee that. But, I always feel better ordering direct from factory. It has not been molested by anyone yet. I know some shops here in Houston get brand new rifles and pistols, go out and shoot the crap out of them, clean them up real nice and sell them as new. Collectors Firearms is notorious for this, especially the high end stuff. I never buy "new" guns from shops, atleast not from around here.

REPR's are great weapons if you don't mind getting raped.
