I agree with that 100%. Im of the school that "minute-of-man" is more important than MOA calculations when the brass starts hitting the ground.

But if viewed from a technical point, I tend to blame the USMC/Unertl for the idea that the US Army Mil-Dot system is "incorrect".

Mabey try HS Precision. I actually cut my pad down and epoxied it down to get the same legnth but it says Hs Precision. Not Remington.

Not even close to best. Very good at its intended purpose at the timeframe, but much better choices have come along in the 25+ years since its design.

It's still a wonderful system. That many people admire and love. There's many other systems that could be dubbed as better, but the M24 has a love in my heart. And I'll continue to use it and use it and use it.

In the same caliber as the system is better, much better? More accurate? Maybe in the last 25 years has not improved much, even using the modified Mauser system.
For example, Magazine, is it necessary? increase the accuracy? not
In many cases it is just cosmetic

I will never understand people who add a magazine to their rifles +10 rounds, just to load a single round when they're shooting on a bench.

I'm not a moderator here but I think we're getting off topic. Not a thread for criticism of the M24. This thread is for M24 enthusiasts who want to build the M24 and it's several variants. On the outside edge of the topic might be building the M2010 since it's built off the M24 receiver but let's not criticize the M24. You can do that elsewhere. If you're not an M24 enthusiast, move on and leave this to the rest of us. Is the M24 the best system out there, that's a matter of opinion since the M24 has the longest 7.62x51mm kill at 1350 meters. If you want to voice opinions on what's best, start another thread and stay off this one.

Sounds right to me as well, criticism can be placed on any rifle and or system however, this is not that forum.

I just finished a week long course of fire with my M24 and it was outstanding!

I've probably seen 5 different styles of crowns not really even paying much attention, on genuine Army M24's.

I wouldn't worry too much about how legit that feature was, as there didn't seem to be much of a standard and probably only began to show evidence of a standard since Remington has been making barrels rather than Obermeyer. When the barrels are not manually cut, that probably helps them stay more consistent from one to another.

I think Mike Rock made them not Obermeyer.

Correct Mike Rock made the first M24 barrels in the Obermeyer style. Remington at the time did not have the hammer forging equipment. When they did get it, they recalled the M24s to be re-barreled.

Yeah thats a common mixup about the Rock vs Obermermyer manufacture. Its prob because the 5R pattern was designed and patented by Boots Obermyer.

I understand what you are suggesting, but it is incorrect. The AK-74 rifling pattern is very different from the "5-R".

The AK-74 is a 4-Groove barrel, the 5-R is 5-Grooves. The AK-74 had to have an even number of grooves since the gas port needed to be drilled at a 90 Degree angle (versus the 45 Degree angle of the AK-47) due to eliminating jacket shear from the higher velocity round. The port is drilled into the groove, rather than the land.

The 5-R pattern would not be compatible since it does not have opposing lands/grooves. If the Russians used 5-R, they would end up with a gas port halfway into a land and halfway into the groove, which would increase jacket shearing.

I believe the Dragunov may have been first w/ the "R" rifling?

Had to look it up, but the SVD also has 4-Grooves. However, its min. acceptable accuracy requirement is listed as 14.7 inches @ 656 Yards.

I believe that's w/ surplus ball ammo. It is said they do better w/ match ammo. No secret where Boots got the idea from; some of his apprentices have stated as such.

I've read about Enfields with 2-Groove bores having the radial profile much earlier. But the prime benefit of using Odd #'d grooves is what differentiates the Obermyer pattern. Its probably true he got the idea from those previous designs.

I would direct your attention to a genuine M24 Blast Suppressor on Gunbroker right now save for the astronomical price he's asking for it. They are rare but they're not worth paying this kind of money for and don't be fooled, he claims it is a genuine Remington part. Genuine USGI yes but Remington DID NOT make the blast suppressors. They add a little weight, a little length and they do affect the harmonics and throw the POI off by as much as 1 MOA so buyer beware.

I was able to get a M24 flash hider for 55 dollars shipped USPS. The only catch is i can't have the flash hider installed at the same time as the front sight. The flash hider has some what appears to be cosmoline or some protective oil on it.

Never handled one myself, just asking if they have any ID numbers or manufacturers code. Yours looks fine, and so far no fakes or repros have been found.

There are no markings on the blast suppressor. New they come in a clear plastic tube. The plastic tube has the sticker on it with all the logistical data is on it.

The blast suppressor you have seems to be the later model with the lock ring for the OK Webber front sight base. The one I have is the earlier version that would not fit on the OK Webber base. The OK Webber base is taller than the Remington front sight base and the lock ring would not clear the Webber base.
