Guys,

I recently read an article in a magazine that high-lighted some great hunts to take your AR on. One of them was ground hogs in PA. I've been a PA hunter all my life and know of no area where auto rifles are legal. I can't find anything in the regs booklet on this either. A peer of mine made the suggestion that if you don't have a magazine on you when you get checked it can be claimed as a single shot firearm. I've never heard of this. Can anyone shed some light on this. I'd love to take my grendel to my favorite areas in Schuylkill county.

Thanks

Re: AR's for PA hunting

I ground hog hunt alot in WV, MD, OH, and PA. One day I was hunting a large meadow where part of the meadow was in WV and part was in PA. I was on the PA side(didn't know).

I am a handicapped hunter so I have to setup next to my truck(no problem there). I was about 10 yards off the dirt road and setup behind some round bales.

After about an hour and a couple of ground hogs a PA State Trooper drove down the dirt road. And stopped to see what I was doing. I offered him a cold Pepsi and two of my mother's fresh pepperoni Rolls. Which he happily accepted.

We talked about hunting for about 20 minutes. The he mentioned to me that I was a pretty good guy, and he would not like to see me get into any trouble.

So he flat out said I will be driving to the head of this road then turning and come back by this field. Now I would hate to arrest a nice guy, but a nice guy should know it was illegal to hunt ground hogs in PA with a semi-automatic rifle. When he pulled off that was the fastest I have moved in ten years. Tom.

Re: AR's for PA hunting

unless it's some type of exotic hunting preserve or "caged hunt" type of hunting farm (which some of the rules don't apply), the semi rifles are a no no. however being a Pa. game animal, i don't think that the preserve would be able to include it.

i would be interested on that article / magazine / ad.

technically if the gas tube is removed, it is a "manually operated rifle".

agian if you can pass that ad on to me i'd appreciate it, you can PM it if you wish.

Re: AR's for PA hunting

I think the magazine was called the AR rifleman. I'll try to find the article for you if I still have the issue. It was abut 3 months ago.

Re: AR's for PA hunting

Automatic, and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are unlawful firearms (as are gas operated). Not having a magazine on hand doesnt change the characteristics of the rifle. It might be possible to modify the rifle itself to render it either non auto loading, or non gas operated, but its not a risk Id take. In addition to being possibly fined, your rifle might be taken from you.

Re: AR's for PA hunting

I was looking for the magazine today. As is typical, I can't find it. I thought it was a magazine dedicated to the AR rifleman but maybe it was just an article in another magazine. I believe the article was written by Craig Fortier and I believe it was entitled "Fortier's Favorites". I just dropped an e-mail to my local Fish and game office re. this topic hopefully they will get back to me. I'll be sure to let you all know what they say.
