Guys I have been thinking about contacting Ashbury Int. for the MOD 1 for my TRG 42. Who has experience with this system? I would like your thoughts. Also, with companies like XLR, KRG, etc is this platform worth the $2500.ish cost? Any insight that makes this worth its cost would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I know Poison123 owned a TRG with this system and I have contacted him for his thoughts as well.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

It is an EXTREMELY well made system.

If it's worth it can only be decided by you. I have had folks tell me I am completely nuts for spending what I do on rifles and optics. Same thing with cameras. I think folks are nuts for spending what they do on clothes and shoes. Catch my drift?

I hear exactly what your saying. I am the same way on firearms, optics, and camera equipment. My question isn't about spending money. My question is whether it is a superior stock to the other available options. If it is going to be a thousand plus dollars more than everything else out there, it should provide features that other stocks don't have. So I am looking for information that is not subjective but informative.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

In all honesty the Ashbury doesn't really offer anything that anyone doesn't. I bought mine because no one was using them at the time and I like being the cool kid on the block

If you do get one...make sure you loctite the shit out of the action screws. They will vibrate loose....I had it happen on mine. Actually every screw on the chassis should have some applied. The vibration on that chassis is crazy.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

And the list of cool stuff for the TRG just keeps getting longer...

Looks like it does offer a much better integrated rail system than Sako. And has a lot of the features of the "new" TRG that can be bolted on to existing rifles. All for less than a folding-stock upgrade for an existing TRG. Pretty slick system!

Interesting info about the action screws and vibration from Poison123... Thanks!

Cheers,

Sirhr

The only feature that I can think of offhand that sets it apart is the adjustable pistol grip angle. You can set it where you like it. Most of the other chassis also don't have an option for an integrated monopod.

I just really can't answer "if it's worth it" because that is a personal decision. If you line up the AICS, AX, Whiskey-3, XLR Evolution, Eberlestock, Saber-FORRST MOD1 ect. you will see a bunch of very well constructed chassis systems, each with distinctly different construction and associated feel to them. I have been fortunate enough to get to handle and shoot most of the Remington based chassis out there. They are all significantly different in the feel you get when you shoulder them.

The system is nice. I have my TRG42 in the MOD1 and it's very comfortable, balances very well and has quite a few adjustments. Do I wish it were less expensive?...You bet, but in the end I'm happy with it.

If I had any complaints it would be that I don't like black anywhere on the system, the CF portion of the handguard and the adj cheekpiece part of the assembly, but I know how to resolve that inexpensively if I want to.

Also the cheekpiece range of adjustment isn't as much as what you'd find with the KWM loggerhead system. I run my cheek rests higher than almost anyone I've ever shot with and there is no way the cheek rest gets as high on this system with a 50 MOA cant (30 MOA Ashbury top rail, and 20MOA on Spuhr mount). During my first range session I adjusted how I get my cheekweld and it's very comfortable and repeatable for me - I rest less of the weight of my cheek on the stock.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

What is interesting about Ashbury Intl is I just found out a couple of weeks ago that they are about 2 miles from my house. Guess I need better situational awareness. I need to go check them out sometime soon.

I dont find this to be entirely accurate to brand all of their chassis as doing this. You had a Templar in a Remington base. My Remington 700 bolts right in and is extremely rigid with that top rail. No loctite is needed on mine. I have 2 chassis now and neither have loosened up on me. But even in the manual they say to use just a dab of blue loctite on the action screws and main hand guard bolts. It's just an added security step that you can take but havent found the need to do it on mine. Maybe I just got lucky

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

I really like the look of the Ashbury

....but can someone explain why they use a third party pistol grip and then manage to make it look like it's not screwed on quite right?

For the money, I'd expect they could have either modified the Magpul one or done their own and got it to look like it fits right.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

It fits just fine and is comfortable. You select the grip angle you desire. Yes it looks funky but it is improvement on feel when your prone shooting for hours on hours.

Mine was the true REM700 Templar footprint. The chassis wasn't modified other than to open up the bolt handle area a tad bit.

How many actual rounds have you fired through it so far? We can always ask George what his open is on them....that should be a good laugh

I've fired enough on both platforms to know mine aren't backing out. But yet again I didn't sell mine because the screws loosened up.....

Why does George need to express his opinion on the chassis? They either work or they don't. Some people like them, some don't. It's all about personal fit, people love the AICS, I cant stand them. So does it make me wrong? No. If you hate on a chassis because you didn't know how to care for it or set it up correctly then that is a warped sense of judgement on gear. Both of mine are working for me. I actually wish they were not so much money because I would buy more. But my one gripe is they are very pricey.... But you get what you pay for.

What ever you say. And I sold mine for more reasons than the screws backing out. So don't assume bud.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

Just curious, but I have been watching this with interest as I am thinking about one of these for a 338 build. What exactly do you think George's opinion of this chassis would be? Also, I would be very interested to see your opinions regarding the pros and cons of this chassis.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

I'm not assuming anything, "bud". Im using both the rifles everyday. Function is flawless.

The Pro's and Cons are being hashed our right in front of you DeSnifter.... scroll up and start reading.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

If you want George's opinion ask him.

My biggest complaint is Ashbury is a pain in the ass to deal with. I sold my 338 TRG version because I was trying to get one of their ASW338s with a 300wm kit. After getting the "we'll get you a price for weeks on end etc" I said fuck it and was done dealing with them as a company. Hence my reason for selling my remaining GAP Built Ashbury.

Another problem is the wobble with the front handguard, there's a way to fix that it involves epoxy. But it'll be a pain in the ass to get the handguard off after that.

Putting that aside ergonomics on the chassis are great. I loved it, but I made the choice to go back to my AI because they quite honestly suck as a company and hopefully will get their shit together.

You gotta love before Cory became the defacto distributor for them, getting in touch with their sales person to get the buying process started. Then learning a fair bit of time later, that person had be "let go" and there's now no record of anything you've done with them.

The full length top rails on the Rem700 actually make the system extremely rigid. There are ins and outs to every setup available from them.

Thanks for clarifying. I didn't realise this.

So the pistol grip is adjustable for angle...it rotates somehow and locks at the desired angle? Is it in steps or continuously adjustable?

If I remember correctly there are different grip angles you can buy. Its not one is adjustable for all angles.

Re: ASHBURY SABER MOD 1

Well, I'm a little late to the party, but here's my take.

Screws loosening. I've never seen this problem in more than a dozen rifles. I've got two personal systems, 1 308 and 1 338. They ride on the quad all over the ranch, get shot every other day and I've never had a screw back out.

Fore end wobble. I have no detectable 'wobble' in the fore end. There is a certain amount of flex in the tube itself, but I don't see that unless I apply a good amount of pressure to it while holding the barrel. To me it's a non-issue.

The pistol grip is setup to use an angle block with an AR-15 compatible mount. 3 angles are available, each is adjustable for reach to the trigger. You can use any AR-15 type pistol grip, the supplied grip is the Magpul MIAD.

As far as being a pain to deal with, they have never really had a commercial presence before, strictly military contract work. Like all startup operations, building a new product and getting timely delivery has been an issue. They don't like it any more than the customer and they continue to work the problem with suppliers and internal documentation. They are working to get lead times down and communicate better. I talk with them every week. As of this minute I even have a Mod 1 700 SA unit in stock, so they are trying to get delivery to reasonalble as best they can.

Now all of this of course is comming from one who sells their products. I think as stated above there are +/- points to ALL the available systems, plus intangable things like feel and fit that are in the mind of the user. I did, however, spend my own money to get two of them and I would get more if I needed them. No, they are not cheap. But like S&B scopes, it's up to the buyer to decide 'worth'. I made my decision.

I appreciate the input. Like I mentioned above I own an XLR , Manners, and always like trying new stuff. The input has been helpful. Not wanting to start wars. I just want to feel educated before making a decision.
