Well done Athlon! But will it have Japanese glass?
It is not replacing the Cronus or Cronus BTR. The Cronus was just discontinued due to the upgrading to the Cronus BTR. It will just be an addition to the Ares line. It will be in between the Ares BTR and the Cronus BTR. And yes, you are correct as far as glass. It will have Chinese ED glass as opposed to the Japanese glass on the Cronus BTR.Other than some minor stuff this is about the same as the Cronus except it won't have BTR glass? Is this replacing the Cronus?
All the Ares scopes I've handled had turrets which lined up perfectly or so close it wasn't worth getting a magnifying glass out to examine closer. One example would be the 2.5-15 I had which had turrets with less lash/turret play and lining up better than my Bushnell LRHS 3-12, though turret action was on the light side.
A friends 4.5-27 has normal turret action and are very good turrets that line up well.
The ETR turrets on the pre production model at SHOT were superior to current Ares and about the same as the Cronus turrets but with a different feel.
The Midas TAC pre production models had very nice turrets as well and it'll be less expansive than the Ares line, though a more basic scope lacking illume and without a tree reticle.
They line up but have soft clicks.... they also track beautifully. Try one in a shop before you buy it boss.... my Ares BTR does not click like a Nightforce but it didn't cost as much either.
I preordered one too. Athlon told me a few weeks ago that they get them mid July. Will go through in house QC and them ship to vendors first part of August.Anyone get theirs yet and can give some feedback? I pre-order-bought months ago. Frothing at the bit to get it...

You are correct, the Cronus BTR is getting a floating dot reticle. I believe its debut is going to be at Shot Show!I got to play with one a couple weeks back at a local shoot where they brought out a bunch of glass for folks to demo and get feedback on. I was very impressed...we were running an XRSii with the H59 and a PSTG2 with the EBR2C reticle on the rifles my girlfriend and I were shooting. I had been up for something like 36hrs straight at that point so my eyes weren't in the best shape to judge glass, though I've found that fatigue plays a big role and shouldn't be ruled out when judging glass. I've been impressed by scopes before and when my eyes get tired it goes to hell. That being said, I would honestly put the ETR in the middle between the two scopes I was running that day, though it's closer to the XRSii. Clarity was superb (considering my eye fatigue), as was the feel, fit, and finish of the scope. It felt like it would give my XRSii a run for the money, and while I love the PSTG2, I'd pick an ETR over it all day long...glass was brighter, a bit more crisp, and the new reticle rocks, plus the turrets were a bit nicer with the clicks being more solid and crisp.
At the same time we were using another squad members NF to do some spotting (ATACR 5-25) so I got a good comparison side by side with a few price point scopes. I love the NF, owned a 7-35 but couldn't justify keeping it and having that much $$ tied up in one scope. So I replaced it with the XRSii as I love the center floating dot reticles and it was a good bang for the buck. My girlfriend runs a PST as it's more than enough glass for her, but we plan on upgrading to the ETR for her gun when I can get one. She loved the ETR and said the glass was close to the XRS in her eyes, but she preferred the reticle on the Athlon due to the simpler design over the H59. While I don't feel it was a better scope than the XRS, I certainly wouldn't put it that far behind. It kicks the PST's butt IMO, and that's coming from someone who really likes the new PST and the value they give you for the money. Biggest standout to me was the reticle...they listened to consumers and it shows when you take in the features of the scope, but the reticle is outstanding...it's simple, yet precise, and I can't wait to run one. I did ask if they planned on putting the reticle in a Cronus BTR and they were looking at next year maybe for that...that will be a scope I'll own for sure. Hope my ramblings helped at least a bit.
Yes, that is the current ETA.midwayusa.com lists the ares etr with a backorder/in stock date of early/mid-July, depending on model and color choice. I hope that's true, but i'm mentally prepared to wait awhile longerif need be.
I bet if you call Doug at Cameraland, he will beat that Midway price.
Having been one that already bought this scope thru Doug at Cameraland --I'd bet they're right.I bet 502 is right. I wouldn't buy without calling Doug first.
I don't think Athlon was expecting that Midas TAC to turn out so good, LOL. I love that scope! It's now the best bang for the buck of any scope I know of right now.
Anybody have a clue when these are showing up?
We should be getting in our first shipment within 1-2 weeks. After that we will run them through our QC lab before shipping them out. Dealers should be receiving them by the last week of July, I suspect. I know many dealers have pre-orders on these optics, so if you miss the first run, there will be more arriving in August.

Thanks, that's great news.Last week got a chance to stop by Athlon in Olathe,Ks. and got a chance to look thru the Ares ETR as compared to a Cronus. Very impressed by the picture quality by the Ares which I liked better based on picture alone. Looked sharper all the way through the power range.
