I'm looking for some help from any Australians out there. I recently accepted a job in Australia and would like to know what it would take to bring a rifle with me to Australia. Or if it would be easier to just buy one when I get there. I've looked through most of the government web sites, but it's giving me a headache! :)

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

G'day mate,
Phil's given you a good heads up to start with, but if I assume you're only on a temporary visa you've probably no chance of either bringing wth you or purchasing.
Having said that however,it really depends on which state you'll be resident in & the relevant firearms registries will be able to give you the information you need.
Each state has it's own registry & way of doing things & what you lose in one state you make up for in another, for example a permit to acquire is required in each state to purchase a firearm. In Victoria this is done electronically at the point of sale,in NSW it takes two weeks,in Western Australia the firearm must be purchased before a PTA is submtted etc,.
I'm not saying it can't happen, but talking to the registry in which state you're resident in is the first step.

Thanks for the replies!

I'll be in the Northern Territory. I've tried to contact a shooting club there, but they have not replied to me.

Macca,

I think you may be right. I'll only be there for 2 years, maybe 4 at most, so I'm starting to think I won't be able to do anything.

I guess I'll just have to save my money and go on a shopping spree when I get back to the States. ;-)
