I have 3 choices to load in my pack for a mule deer hunt coming up. 500 yards is my max range I will shoot without closing the distance.
    I have a 16” 308
    A 20” 6.5 creedmoor
    And 7mm-08 24” barrel.

I would perfer the 308 due to it being a carbon barrel and light weight but worried about bullets for that range.

    What do you all recommend?

So what I was looking at was the Mostly was the Accubond which likes to open at a velocity of 1800fps and higher and the Accu bond lr will open down to 1300 fps.
16” 308 starts at 2570 at muzzle and finishes at 1633 at 400 yards. All are approx.

    Speed is not a problem
For the 20” 6.5 creed as it is still at 1800fps at 400yards. But I pick up a pound as it is a stainless barrel.

What kind of fps do you need at 400 and 500 for a solid kill?
Well I want my bullet to open. Like I said before the accubond opens at 1800fps so at 400 that takes it out of the equation for .308. For 6.5 it would be ok.
If I can find a factory loaded accubond lr it opens down to 1300fps and that would open the .308 at 400 yards as I am at roughly 1600fps out of the 16” barrel at 400 yard range.

Maybe set a shorter max engagement range in line with the capabilities of the cartridge and projectile. Velocity and energy will drop fast with the lower starting velocity. Getting impacts at longer ranges may not be the issue - the issue will be the terminal performance.

    155 AMAX in the .308.
    2000 MR powder.

    Be amazed.

I ran an 18” .308 with 168 BTHP last year for whitetail.
Would not hesitate on a 500 yd shot with that in consistent low wind.
Made a mess of vitals at 250.
Made a leap and 2 steps and dead.

1 lb of rifle is OK, skip some useless junk in the pack if needed.
Slight weight gain may be easier to shoot off pack, tree, seated off legs with sling, etc.
Im right at 8.5 lbs for my main mtn hunting rifle.
    Never feels to heavy.

With handloads and Hornady's reccomended minimum of 1,600fps for the 143ELDx to expand. It puts me at 830yds with my 20" 6.5cm.

And about 830 ft lbs of energy, right?

This is the table I use. Seems to hold true to around 1000yds. The furthest I've shot this rifle. It had a 2.5-10x42 scope. So I usually don't grab it for long range plinking.

Whichever gun you shoot the best is the answer.
If you’re worried about expansion at lower velocity, run eldms in either 3. I’ve killed a pile of whitetail, axis, and black buck with 140 eldms out of a 20” 6.5 creed at 70-500 yards. They’ll punch through at least the first shoulder of deer sized game at close range and make it to the vitals. If further out, they will stay together better and perform like your classic bonded hunting bullets. If you make a questionable shot and you’re at a decent range, they will still expand and cause a lot of damage. I’ve lost game with a not so good shot from a 178 eldx in a 16” 308. At lower velocities the ELDXs and other bonded bullets can pencil through unless you hit bone and create a rather narrow wound channel. Made the switch to eldms and they’re awesome. For mule deer, I’m more concerned about wind drift so I run a 20” 30 Sherman mag (300 prc ai) with 225 eldms or 245 berger elite hunters . This year I’m going to use an 18” 6.5 prc with 147 eldms or 156 elite hunters.
For hornady: their eldms have thinner jackets than the ELDXs.
Berger: their hunting bullets have thinner jackets than their hybrid target bullets.
I’ve seen TTSX, partitions, and federal terminal ascents used on mule deer and other deer sized game (I part time guide clients every fall), and nothing drops them quicker, even with questionable shots, than a frangible bullet.

Back country? Like hiking? With a pack? Do you shoot them equally well? If so, pick the lightest weight rifle. If not, pick the lightest weight rifle that you shoot within your accuracy requirements. You’re going to be carrying it for days, but- ideally- only shooting it once.

    7-08 and Big Game powder.
    139/145 LRX
    150 ELDX
    150 ABLR
The 150 eld’s have been very impressive. Jumping them ~0.070” and getting great groups and been one and done on whitetail. Groups attached are 10 shot groups.

I would take the 6.5 or the .308 depending on how far your shot opportunities are expected to be. If you're shooting 350yds and in I'd take the .308 and enjoy the weight and length, out to 500 I'd take the 6.5.

I avoid solids like the plague and stay away from tough, bonded bullets if I'm trying to eek out the most range that I can from a projectile. The tipped match bullets like Sierra TMK's and Hornady ELD-M's are showing excellent, devastating results on game from close range out to some pretty far distances, showing about 1,800fps as a consistent expansion/fragmenting velocity.

Factory loads are at 2541fps with 20” barrel
There can be a pretty big difference between individual barrels, 100fps or more. So data points are good so long as you realize that you can vary between brands and even within them as well.

FWIW I took a WY cow elk at 370 with a factory loaded 140 E-tip that was a lowly 2,780 at the muzzle. bullet went through and was not recovered. I could get 2,850 to 2,890 with the 140 accubond in my handloads and wouldn't be afraid of that at 500 yards.
The 7mm-08 has peaked my curiosity. I’ve read a lot of positive about it.

I’ve shot at 3 mulie bucks past 500 yards, kilt all three. 7mm-08, 140 Partition, started at 2870 fps.

Shooting 150 ELDX now, but haven’t shot anything past 410 yards. Wouldn’t have any doubts with the 150 at 500.

That Savage 110 is a great rifle, It will definitely do everything you need it too. No need to spend money on new, as someone else has stated, spend the money on ammunition and range time. Personally like to use 165-168gr projectiles in mine, a bit heavier than 150gr, and lighter than 180gr bullets. For me, that's a sweet spot for 30-06. Good luck.
