I have previously owned 2000 and 2005 Chev Duramax 4x4 pickups. I just traded my 2011 Chev K1500 CC LTZ 4k miles for a 2009 K2500 CC LT (with leather) 17k miles with quality AM exhaust and Superchip mods. Why did I ever leave???

Re: Back to Duramax!

My entire family drives vehicles that are manufactured by Government Motors but I presently drive and F-150 4x4. I used to own a '92 Chevy Z-71 and I loved that truck!

Re: Back to Duramax!

Isuzu builds a decent diesel, but I would give the nod to Cummins. Wish it were available in other than Dodge.

Chull, I love the 6.0 (I'm in the repair business).

He nails it. 2007 w/5.9L is about as good as it gets.

Less emissions garbage on the 09 than newer models and $dollars$

The 5.9 Cummins is a great motor, no doubt, but no tranny in a Ford or Dodge can hold a candle to the Allison and Dodge comes in 3rd in overall performance and particularly MPG. All of the big three are great choices but Ford hasn't really had a good option since the 7.3L power stroke (2003) until 2011 with the 6.7L and it hasn't been proven over time yet. The 6.0L was crap, the 6.4L unreliable and a fuel hog. The Duramax/Allison outperforms the others and has stood the test of time and improvements made around 2007.5 model made it my choice once again.

Re: Back to Duramax!

Cummins power for me. I have large toy hauler and my Dodge pulls is great. We pulled it with my buddy's Chev and it has nowhere near the towing ability.

I wish you could go to the pickup store and buy the pickup you want, Ford cab/chassis, Cummins, and the Allison. One can dream right?

Good choice as all now have the particulate filter that throws raw fuel down the exhaust (real good for mileage) to "burn off" the soot on the filter on the exhaust. The 09 is a real good motor. There were some growing pains with the Duramax in the beginning from having machining chips in the injector holes to wiring issues on the FICM, premature wear (smoke and misfire) on injectors and on the connectors on the injectors, and some software issues that are easily cured.

For the most part all of those issues, including software have been cured. Biggest issue is aftermarket controllers and their owners wanting more and more power out of the motor. A diesel is different than a gas vehicle in that you can just keep feeding fuel and air and the thing will make power to the point of grenading.

Re: Back to Duramax!

Had a 08 2500 then traded it in for a F350 cause I needed a long bed for work and a higher tow rating.

Had a programmer with a DPF delete, and turbo back exhaust on the Dodge. Leveling kit, Toyo 35" m/t's, and bull bumper with winch. She was a nice ride. I could get 23.5mpg on the HWY and overall averaged 18mpg.

New truck is stock DRW with towboss pkg which includes 4.30 gears and I have been averaging 14mpg's and averaged 10 over to SD and back. But that was allot of 70+ with a 25' fifth wheel. If I keep it under 60 and closer to 55 I can squeak out close to 18 HWY. So far I like everything about the Ford more, except the engine/tranny. Which includes the badass exhaust brake on the dodge.

Where do you think I got my ID from?? Originally I had a '94 Z-71, then an '02, then an '05!!

No I am in a Tahoe for the family aspect. Nice ride... but not a Z-71 either.

Re: Back to Duramax!

2006 SB Q/C with the awesome 5.9L. beat the piss out of her every chance I get and wakes up ready for more in the morning.

She'll be getting a transmission refresh and upgrade at about 90k (currently just under 85k). Currently has a AFE Cold Air intake, a 5" Magnaflow exhaust, and a Smarty programmer. Also a set of 33s or 35s in the near future.

Re: Back to Duramax!

I've got a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500. Its got the 5.9L 12 valve engine with the 4500 transmission. Its got 193,000 miles on it and runs like a champ still. Im dropping it off at the body shop for some love. Its been used hard and I owe it some body work and a new coat of paint. I've got engine upgrades but only to help me towing heavy loads. Despite the transmissions they are solid trucks.

Re: Back to Duramax!

My son has a Chevy 2500 with the Duramax/Allison combo. It has been a damn nice ride and he has had zero trouble. It hauls a trailer almost daily that is loaded with heavy lawn equipment and has taken us to TX on a hunt. It is very nice on the open road and we averaged just over 20 MPG on the trip.
My personal truck is a F150 Super Crew FX4. I can't justify the extra expense for diesel. It is a 2005 that I bought new and only has 36,000 miles on it.

I agree. I specifically went looking for another 5.9 24V. I feel the best motor ever put out there.
I wouldn't shy away form the 12V at all. Matter of fact I'd lover to have an 02 or such as a play toy.

My current one is an '06 quad cab dually with 4" dual exhaust straight piped. Working on an intake than that'll be it. With it being straight piped and able to "breath" there is no need to a chip. I get 22 mpg on the highway pulling a goose neck horse trailer or my 26' 5th wheel coach!

Duramax is lacking at best. I will say the 2011 Ford Stroker is a beast of a motor. Kinda waiting to see what issues it has over the next 2 yrs. So far the biggest drawback is a $200 Oil Change.

Re: Back to Duramax!

Well Since my last smartass post on this thread my EGR failed and now I have a Blown Head Gasket. Fucking 6.0 power joke is going to cost me 12K. The EGR is the third one first time for the head gasket. I am going to Bullet Proof to get all my parts and sell this TURD

The Ford diesel whether it is the 7.3 or the 6.0 keeps us busy. The Cummins is the way to go in a pick up. There are currently several 5.9 engines that have at least 1 million miles.

Re: Back to Duramax!

The old Dodge vs Chevy battle!!lol

They are both good engines but the 6.6 Duramax is a better overall engine package which is why Cummins is developing it's own v8 diesel which looks very much like a Duramax block. I have built several of these and the last one was just over 900HP as a daily driver. Most of the truck pulls around here are starting to be won by the Duramax trucks except in the MOD class which is still being pushed by the mechanical injection P-Pump. I have done tuning on both engines and each has there own good and bad points but as technology progresses you will see more and more v8 diesels.

Thats PowerSMOKE.

Re: Back to Duramax!

I have a 2006 3500 Cummins 5.9 4x4 long bed SRW with a 110,000 on it and it is a friggen BEAST!!! I get 19.5 around town if I stay out of the turbo and 23 on the Highway if I keep it around 70mph. I am truly sorry for anybody that has to drive a PowerJoke everyday, HAHAHA....

Re: Back to Duramax!

Duramax FTW!!!! I got an 08 with a few go fast gadgets on it... gets the job done whether hooked to a load just driving, and have had Zero problems out of it, and the skinny pedal gets pushed hard quite a bit!
