I want a backup RDS on my .308 DPMS.

2 options the way I see it.

Larue quick release mounts and I quickly change them. My question with this set up is what type of return to zero are you guys getting when you remove and replace a Larue SPR mount?

Second option is a red dot mounted on the scope at a 45 degree angle. How well does this work? What is the best RDS and mount for this set up?

Re: Back up RDS on Scope?

On my ar 15 with an Aimpoint and A.R.M.S. throw lever mount I can say that I see no POI change, if there is its very little but I always make sure to place the Aimpoint in the exact same spot on the rail.

Re: Back up RDS on Scope?

It all depends on your use and what scope you are mounting it to if going with a combo mount.

POI-change with good mounts would be negligeble, especially when mounting the RDS.

Some claim that the RDS-mount on top of ACOGS suck due to the high/lack of (take your pick) cheekweld, but it has an advantage when it comes to shooting off a rest, bipod or whatever and that is you dont have to cant the rifle.
Even though it is a 7moa dot it is possible to hit targets at 200+ yds using this solution, cheekweld or not...

For shooting offhand or on improvised rests, sandbags, windowsills etc the 45-degree solution is good, but I find it difficult to cant at the same angle every time, possibly reducing accuracy at extended ranges.
An alternative to the traditional 45-degree scopemounted RDS could be a TNVC MURLM.

Re: Back up RDS on Scope?

I am putting an IOR 2.5-10 on a DPMS. I already have a larue spr mount. I am trying to decide if I use 2 seperate set ups that I switch out depending on what I need. I am worried about return to zero issues.

Or mounting the rds piggyback on the scope at a 45 degree angle. I figure if I am using the rds then they are pretty close because if they were far away I would be using the IOR anyway.

Re: Back up RDS on Scope?

As for offset redots, your best choices will most likely be:
Doctor, J-Point, RMR, T-1.

Arguable the long battery life and durability of the T-1 would be best, but it is also a pricey setup. Some of the Doctors and RMRs can be had for cheaper. The J=Point would be the cheapest option, and the cheapest I would recommend. I would not suggest other cheap Mini-Red Dots (MRDs) like the RDP-II, or other airsoft copies.

As for how well it works, that will depend on you. It also depends on what you wish to accomplish. If your going to try and shoot tight groups at various ranges with the red dot, the lack of cheek weld is not going to help, and you will most likely not be successful. If you are looking to have an option to put quick shots on man sized targets at close range, the offset MRD may be your solution.

Re: Back up RDS on Scope?

Oh, you also have several mounting options.

You could use the J-Point/Doctor base that Larue offers and mount the red dot on your Larue scope mount.

Another option is the TNVC SAR, which would you let angle the MRD however you like.

The MRD could be mounted using something like a Daniel Defense 1 o'clock offset rail attached to your handguard or receiver rail. That way the MRD is present regardless of what primary optic you are using.
