The finish on the upside of the bolt is rather bad, but the other faces are all good. This is a new rifle, disappointed with the finish.

Try rubbing that top face with oil and a cloth, I'll bet most of those marks disappear.

It's an AI, it's meant to be shot, if you want pretty buy something pretty, an AI is a working gun.

I can understand what some of you are saying, but come on. Dude paid $4K+ for a rifle. . .sure, it will get covered in scratches but they will be MY scratches. At some point some people who do not own 15 match rifles still expect a certain standard with something thats "new". The shiny still exists for them. Especially when your basically paying for $1500-2000 worth of metal/material and $2000+ worth of craftsmanship. Its not outlandish for someone to expect a little bit of spit shine.

Thank you, nly205. I used to buy cz rifles which have good finish, maybe ai rifle are for military usage, so have less standard on cosmetic stuff. I don't know, and can't find another ai rifle to compare.

Thank you! Actually I don't know if it is a "standard" finish on all ai rifles or not, so post here to show to everyone. Just want to know more about the ai products from every aspect. From the saying of the guys here, it seems like the regular finish is better than this. Thanks everyone reading my post.

I have seen brand new AWs come in to us at work with worse than that.You will also find the skins dont 'line up' or join perfectly,colour finish on barrel having blemishes.As LL said an AI is a working gun, if you bought one you have bought an incredible rifle, extremely rugged and good shooting.You are paying for that ruggedness and reliability with AI, not for safe queen beauty.If you wanted safe queen beauty then you should have spent the money on something else other than an AI.Congrats on having a fantastic rifle now go shoot it and dont sweat the small stuff

I would be kind of bothered by it even though I would scratch it up worse than that. I bought my jeep with intentions of taking it off road and getting scratched up but I don't want it scratched up before it leaves the lot.

If it bothers you that bad just flip it and buy yourself a custom rifle. There's a bit more attention to detail since it has someone's name on it.

6-7000 dollar rifle,brand new, it better have a damn good finish. Kinda a joke that people say it is a working gun. Yeah it is probably the toughest built, most reliable precision rifle around, but it just came from the factory not the front lines. I would talk to the vendor. I don't see a problem asking here either about the finish. If i paid that much for a rifle I would be irked. The skins don't mate up perfect, true, but that doesn't cover any bare metal that could rust.

Its the ugliest rifle on the market. Complaining about a scratch on it is like complaining about the color of a 300 pound whore's eyes.
AI= terrible fit and finish, but end of the world ruggedness with fantastic accuracy. You don't buy 'em because they are pretty.

You guys fail to understand there is really no finish on that part... it's not coated.
I can pull out my 97 and it will look the same then pull out my 2011 and there will be no difference.
They don't "coat" that plate like people think. And the camera flash certainly makes it look worse than it is.
Order a Tac Ops rifle if you want perfection in terms of coating. The AI has never been considered "pretty" and the fact is, it will look and act the same forever.

I agree. My TRG is now full of working scratches, especially after yesterdays knee deep snow hike. Key is I put those scratches on the gun. It looked nice when I got it, now it looks better
If Sako can build a gun with no scratches in the finish for $3200, AI damn well better be able to build a gun with a good finish for the price they charge.

The fact is, if you are surprised by this, you are not paying attention up front, every picture they look the same.

I will tell you this,

Everyone here is right, yes we shouldn't care about a small scratch or two but if you paid that kind of money, I'd expect it to be free from blemishes also. I guess the lesson here is to look it over before you take it home and/or understand what you're getting when you buy that kind of rifle, a good solid tool.

to the guys who are saying that because he paid x amount of money the finish should be perfect I will say this.If you went and paid big bucks for a perfectly finished and beautiful custom rifle with tight chamber and light trigger ,then humped that rifle around the hills and lived in holes in the ground,crawled around in the dust and mud and dirt and wet for a few days .If after that you squeezed the trigger and got a fail to fire or say you try chamber a round and it binds up would you complain ?No because thats not what that rifle was designed for or where all those dollars you paid for went.However with an AI AW that is exactly where the money has gone.Iv seen them given shocking abuse and go through alot of shit yet when you try feed a round or fire a round it does exactly what it should.If people like the AI look but want perfect finish then get an AICs and drop something into it, It will shoot just as well as an AI and look better.If you want a rugged weapon that is needed for harsh weather or treatment then go AI.Il post pics of ours tomorrow or the day after.None of them came to us like safe queens but Im pretty sure I could beat someone to death with one then shoot it immediately after.

They all have some finish imperfections, they are a working mans rifle. The AE has a blued bolt and tends to have a better finish, the AW has some type of parkerizing or similar coating to protect the metal, but its not as pretty. You cant see in the pic, but there are scratches on the AW bolt shroud

There was a great video of a guy doing a proper "rifle break in". He threw it down a a dirt road, picked it up and threw it down on the dirt and rocks a couple more times. He then looked into the camera and said "now its broken in". Proceeded to shoot a sub 1/2 MOA group with his new rifle. Proof his system worked just fine.

To the OP, one of the best things to me about an AI is how they look better with age. I would be ashamed to own one that looks 100%. You now own the best rifle you will ever own.
