Badger M2008 or other .223 Action Opinions?

For my next project, I'm thinking of building a .223 with a Badger M2008 action, a Manners T2A stock, and a 18" or 20" barrel with Surefire brake. It will mostly be used for punching paper at random distances, and used for one of my competitions at 600, 800, 900, and 1000 yards. I was wondering if there is a picture thread showing a bunch of these actions in different stocks. Also, does anyone see any kind of problem with this theoretical setup? and anyone who has one of these actions care to share the pros and cons, specifically how smooth the bolt operates.

Thanks,
Troy

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

I do not own one but shoot my buddies almost every other weekend. His is chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua Improved and is riding in a Manners T4A with one of the few mini chassis they made for the action. The action is incredibly smooth with its 60 degree bolt throw and feeds ammo flawlessly from the AW mags which it can run as well as aics mags. The thing is built like a tank and is much bigger than 700 clones, it also has a flat bottom with multiple recoil lugs which I like a lot. When you cycle the bolt it sounds like a piece of very well engineered equipment. What I mean by this is it sounds completely different than all of my rifles which are Remingtons and Stillers. Not saying these are bad, just different. They should pattent that sound like Harley Davidson or Flowmaster does. My Next build will probably included a Badger!

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

I had a Badger M2008 in .308 riding an AICS 2.0 stock like most people have it, and it has been by far my favorite rifle. The only thing about your setup that I would question is it being in .223, as it is a good paper punching round, but not so much for competition IMHO.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

Thanks for the opinions so far, they are making me fall deeper into the money hole lol as far as the round and competition, we have a .223 competition class here at those yards, and it looks very challenging, so I want to try it out.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

Badger actions are excellent. I've got one in a AICS myself and it's built like a brick shit house. It's a heavy action for sure, but an outstanding product.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

They won't do the M2008 with a .223 bolt face. I called and asked about it a few months ago and they said the bolt is just too fat to have any semblance of reliable feeding.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

So far everything I've read on the action has been fantastic other than it's weight. I plan on building one in 6.5 Creedmoor, once I get paid I'm going to take the plunge.

Seriously?! Well, just step on my dreams then.

can anyone else confirm this?

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

I've got a M2008 Gen 2 chambered in .260 in an AICS w/ Viperskins. I have to say the bolt lift and subsequent manipulation took some getting used to. In a competition setting I work the bolt fast. On my Remington actions, no big deal. On the Badger, it results in FTE's once in a while (and not short stroking either). I can live with that though. The thing is built like a tank. It's a .25/min rifle.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

I have one and it is actually on its way back from RW Snyder right now. Chambered in .260. I looked around and considered quite a few actions, finally settling on the M2008. I'm glad I did as it is an incredibly built piece of equipment.

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

I really want to build a .223, but I really want a freakin Badger action HAH! So, I guess I'm just going to build a .223 on a different action...any suggestions on an action and the pros and cons?

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

What is the course of fire for these events? What are the other 223 shooters using? I shoot NRA High Power and use a 223 quite regularly but I don't take it past 600. The guys that have used it have been using a very fast twist and heavy bullets, 90 grains I think, that don't fit in a magazine. The rifles these guys shoot are not used across the course because of the long throat and fast twist.

Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

I built one on a Remington:

Re: Badger M2008 Opinions

Smallbore, it's five shots at targets at 600, 800, 900, and 1000 yards. It's not an NRA match, it's just a great group of guys that get together down here and have fun. It's called the Hardrock match, and I'm not sure what the other guys are shooting because I'm not very familiar with all the characteristics of the .223 for longer range, so I've never really asked them.

I think I may build the .223 on a Surgeon 591 action, a Manners T2A stock, Mike Rock barrel, a jewell trigger, and a badger M5 bottom metal. But I haven't ponied up the cash yet, so there's room for changes along the way.
