I have a .925" @ muzzle 30 cal barrel that I want to put a fte on. I live in a non suppressor state and won't be moving anytime soon. Is there any reason not to use the 3/4-24or28tpi fte with a .875" collar? I know 5/8-24 is standard on a 30 cal for suppressor and brake, but like the idea of more metal left around the crown. I know it is only 1/8" more, but more metal is still more metal. I won't be selling the rifle at all so that is not a concern either. What says the gunsmiths on the Hide?

I don't know if this will answer your question or not, but I had Chad Dixon put a FTE Fat Bastard on my Model 70, 300 WM, that measured .92 at the muzzle. It works great, he didn't have to taper the barrel to get it lined up. Although he did have to turn the barrel behind the brake to .750 to set back my front sight mount cause I use it with both irons (aperture sights) and scope.

He also made a thread protector because shooting NRA 1000 yard matches you can't use a brake.

It came out pretty dern good. I also had him put a brake on my .375 H&H, that probably wasn't a good ideal, it just means I shoot it more, and 375s are a bit pricy for plinking.

I'd shoot him an e-mail or PM to ask his opinion.

Ain't nothing wrong with using the larger-diameter brake, although I'd still be inclined to use the "correct" 5/8-24 version if for no other reason than future resale. If that doesn't bug you, then by all means proceed.

I just ran out to my workshop and made a few quick measurements - the 5/8-24 and 3/4-24 versions are essentially the same (within a few thou, which I figure is just manufacturing tolerance).
