Hi all,

I'm looking for use cases for when you find it advantageous to have the ballistic solution calculated in the LRF. Trying to decide if this is a feature I should have in my next purchase.

In the past I have had 3 devices, the LRF for ranging only, a basic Kestrel for wind velocity and a ballistic app on my phone. I feed the info from the first two into the phone's app and get a solution. Note that I primarily use this at the range as I sometimes shoot at an unknown distance range where steel targets are scattered about. My second use is for prairie dogs.

For big game hunting I may range an animal but I'm not trying to put together a ballistic solution for the shot. I'm not comfortable attempting anything beyond about 300 yards. I'll know a pretty simple correction for that type of yardage.

I realize some don't want to have 3 devices but for what I'm doing it doesn't really slow me down. And I like the amount of information provided in my phone's app. It seems like what is going to be displayed in the LRF is more limited information. When do you find it necessary to have the solution displayed immediately in the LRF? Are there any style of matches where an immediate solution is of benefit?

I am not sure there is a right or wrong here, but I personally always find it advantageous to get the solution displayed in the LRF. I don't shoot matches so I can't comment there, but anytime you are in a hurry or under pressure, you can't lose. And in hunting situations recently, that ability to get a fast solution has made the difference for us, both in terms of the first shot, but also followups. Almost as good would be a situation where you have range and something like a Kestrel with AB or a Foretrex where a solution could be had rather quickly.

Can't say how much of a difference it would make for what you do, but it has helped me and my son be faster and more efficient when time mattered.
