Barnes LRX

Re: Barnes LRX

I'm currently using both the 175gr. LRX and 200gr. LRX for load development with my 30-06 and 300WSM rifles respectively. Let me just tell you, these bullets are LONG!!! I havent measured how long the 175gr. round is, but the 200gr. one is 1.624 in. long, I would guess the 175gr. is around 1.5-1.52 in long, its just a bit shorter than the 208gr. AMAX.

I shot the 200gr. rounds a while ago to get a load and I got one with 65.2gr. of RL-17, this is pushing them pretty fast, haven't chronoed it yet, but I'm expecting 2870-2900fps, maybe a bit more.

for the 175gr. LRX, I was told to use the load data for the 180gr. TSX, no big deal. You should be able to achieve a tad bit more speed than the other Barnes solid copper bullets at long range, but that isn't saying much. If anything, I bought the LRX because they said that it had a lower expansion speed than the TSX/TTSX, something like 1500 or 1600fps as opposed to 1800fps, again, not that big of a difference.

Re: Barnes LRX

The 175 LRX has caught my eye as well.
With an advertised BC of .508 for the LRX vs. .505 for the 175 SMK (that's what I use anyhow) , this should help me with my goal of loading up a non-lead hunting load with very similar drop to my target load.

Win-xp man lets keep each other updated as we might be after the same thing. If your so inclined, I am in Morgan Hill with local access up to 380 yards if you wanna work up the load down here when you get the LRXs... let me know. I can set up a portable reloading bench on site if need be.
I'm gonna order some tonight.

Re: Barnes LRX

I'm gonna test some LRXs this week. 175gr. in .308 cal.
I talked to a Barnes rep and we determined 40gr. of Varget would be a good starting point to get 2600-2615 FPS out of my rifle. ( I am hoping to get close to my SMK target drop data) He also stated these will like to be jumped by .050 approx. What this means is I will not be able to use the magazine, which isn't a deal breaker...but not ideal.
FYI, the LRX started crushing/compressing the varget at 42.5-43.0 grains. in a FL sized Remington case.

I think the comment he made about the .050 jump was to be conservative and CYA for him to make sure I didn't get pressure spikes.

Re: Barnes LRX

I had a great experience with the 175 LRX in .308 yesterday.

Rifle-

Rem 700 AAC-SD, added a Timney and B&C M40, but has not been bedded.
EGW 20MOA base, TPS rings
Weaver 3-15x50 mil/mil

Ammo-

Virgin Lapua
Fed 210M
40.9 g Varget
175 LRX seated to 2.033" at the ogive (measured with Sinclair insert in Hornady OAL gauge)

3 shots into a single ragged hole at 100 yards.

I still need to chrono, and try them out at longer range, but for me, shooting off a bipod and simple rear wedge bag, I'm pretty happy!

Re: Barnes LRX

I've been having chrono troubles for a while so I havent had a chance to chrono them out of my rifles, but this weekend is my first chance to chrono the 200gr. LRX out of my 300WSM and the 175gr. LRX out of my 30-06 in case anyone is interested as to how they perform. I'll give some load details when I'm done.

Re: Barnes LRX

just got back from the range (it was 110f here, really hot) with some very interesting chrony results. first up is the r-19 load:

Win brass
CCI LRM primers
Barnes 200gr. LRX
2.910" oal (.065" from the lands)

Reloader 19
66gr. = 2833fps average, 21 ES, .78 MOA
67gr. = 2867fps average, 16 ES, .81 MOA
68gr. = 2900fps average, blown primer, did not continue.

These speeds were a bit better than what I was expecting, but the blown primer really caught me off guard and turned me off from this load. Now for reloader 17:

Reloader 17
64.2gr. = 2980fps average, 8 ES, .52 MOA
64.7gr. = 3005fps average, 6 ES, .46 MOA
65.2gr. = 3027fps average, 12 ES, .67 MOA

All I can say is wow. Reloader 17 completely shattered the low expectations I had for this round and has made this the best hunting round I have so far. I wasn't expecting more than 2800fps since this is a very large bullet (1.624") and the load data Barnes has for the 200gr. TSX were all in the 2700fps range. I think the huge difference in velocities between the TSX and LRX are due in large part to the boat tail on the LRX, greatly reducing the bearing surface, which allows for higher velocities. With this data at hand, I encourage everyone to try the LRX in their 300wsm's to verify my results, because I still can't believe it. I settled on 64.7gr. Since I don't need more than 3k fps.

I also chronied my 30-06 175gr. LRX load, here's the info:

Remington brass
CCI LRM primers
Barnes 175gr. LRX
54gr. Reloader 17
3.340" oal

This shot an average of 2730 fps with an ES of 20, and sub MOA.I was expecting more velocity out of this combo, but this is good I guess.

Indeed, chrono today was an avg. of 2420 FPS. (Granted, Barnes lists their top load for the 180 grain stuff with Varget as 2564 FPS, which isn't THAT much faster...)

I was hoping to find a faster load for this bullet, but I can't argue with the accuracy. I took it all the way to 43.5 gr. Varget but nothing came close to that group.

Maybe I'll try with some 4064 or something

Re: Barnes LRX

No problem, just made a huge batch of em to get ready for hunting season here in Cali, I'm not going to need so many, I only need about a mag full, but I'm pretty sure I won't be able to fight the itch to shoot off a few more, since I know how well they perform

If you have a magnum, I highly recommend the 200gr. LRX round, much better than the TSX imo.

I shoot 168's through my firebird 7mm.. put an 8 twist Krieger on in anticipation for that Berger rumored to be in the works. The 1:8 works excellent with the long bearing surface of the heavy LRX bullets. I've got them chronographed at 3190-3200 and with proper brass prep am seeing some amazing accuracy out of them... less than half inch @ 200. Have grouped under 2" at 400 as well while verifying drops.

This past fall I killed my Elk touch over 700, bullets worked perfect. Until Berger finally releases that 195, I'm sticking with the Barnes. Target accuracy and hunting performance (hand in hand) are more than I expected out of them! Very happy with mine.

My 300 Win 10 twist stabilizes the 200 well enough it seems. Barnes told me that the 175 needs a 10 as well. I don't understand this as the 175 is quite a bit shorter. My '06 has an 11 twist..... To those shooting the 175, what twist is your rifle? Sounds like there may be some 10 twist 308s out there. Thanks!

Holly hell I stumbled into this thread I started a while ago google searching info about accuracy about this bullet. HAHAHA
Anyways I have even forgot that I had these bullets and being for now CA is non lead ammo bullshit I went on looking through my collection and come to find out that I have a box still not used. I will post results with these bullets being shot through a SPS Varmint .308 Win and 26" barrel.

I guess searching for shit will surprise you once in a while! hahaha!
