I just purchased a short action AX chassis from EuroOptics yesterday and I'm trying to decide what contour of barrel I should go with.
I'm haven't decided yet what caliber .308 or 6.5CM.
If I go with a .308 I'm thinking about a 1/11" Krieger.
I would like to try some 155's, but I have several thousand M118LR's stockpiled that I will probably be shooting out of it most of the time.
I've just never strayed from my 1/10' twist barrels on a 308.

From my research there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between an 8 & 8.5 twist for the 6.5CM. Any opinions on the 6.5 twist rate? One better than the other?

What contour would you guys suggest for the AX chassis? I don't want something that's really heavy. I've come to the realization that the chassis alone is over 5lbs so weight isn't a huge concern, but i still want to be able to be mobile with it at some of the matches.
I'm thinking about a heavy palma or a light varmit. I wont' be reusing the barrel or cutting it back and re-chambering it so I really don't need a varmit contour.
Probably going to try a Krieger if I can find one in-stock some where and cut it to 22-23".

Thanks guys

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

For these types of stocks I would suggest a Tubb contour. It's basically a Remington Varmint contour with a longer breach so you can set it back and rechamber when it wears. I would either choose the Tubb or the light Palma contour.

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

I have done a lot of rifle with the Medium it finishes around .850 at 22". Plenty stiff and not so heavy.

The Heavy palma is a little on the too heavy side for me so on a lot of the builds I split the diff between the two and go Medium/Heavy finishing at .860 at 30" and about .892 at 22" This is what I went with on a couple shorter barreled builds and could not be happier. My 300Wm finished at 22" with this contour and it is going to go in an AX when the long actions come around. Here is a .308 with above countour finished at 20"

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

I'm in the same boat want sort of a half way barrel so it is heavier then a sporter for longer ranges but not painful to carry in field I was looking at a light or medium Palma contour

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

Does Krieger make a medium palma? Would this be their standard palma contour?
It finishes at .82 I believe. (actually I'm reading that wrong. I think .82 is a the end of the full length blank so it will probably be more than .82)

Gun looks sweet in that new AX chassis. Makes me want to get mine built.
Think I'll probably build it in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 22" barrel.
Just need to figure out who has a Krieger barrel in stock and what twist rate to go with. 8 or 8.5" ? Any suggestions?

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

Bruno's Shooters Supply always has a large selection of Krieger barrels in stock with the popular profiles and twist rates. I purchased my .264 (6.5 mm blank) from them last month. I chose the 8" twist rate for my barrel and decided to get it chambered in .260 Rem. They have both 8" and 8.5" available last time I checked. Third Generation Shooting Supply also has Krieger .264 barrels in stock but only seemed to have 8.5" blanks available and limited barrel contours. You can click on the profile details on both sites and they will give you the starting and ending outside diameters and breech lengths.

Re: Barrel Contour for New AX Build

I went with the med or standard Krieger palma from third generation shooting supply, think they have them in stock still. Mine will headed out next week for the 6.5 build. I recently did a .308 from Bartlein, 24" MTU with FTE brake in a AICS--with scope it's 18 pounds, yeah, I don't far with it!

I wanted it heavy though but could have been a pound or two lighter-oh well. I'm estimating the 6.5 to be 11.5-12 with HS stock
