Hey there. I have a 1.25 dia straight brux barrel. Im planning to rechamber and thread the muzzle. Im also wanting to lighten it up quite a bit and cut it to around 28".

Talking with my gunsmith yesterday he said I would have to cryo treat after removing alot of material. Is this standard practice? I know the cryo treatment topic is a debate in itself but is this necessary in this case? Im on somewhat of a budget and would like to avoid it. That being said this is going to be for a precision elr rig so accuracy is top priority.

Id like to hear some people thoughts and experiences.

Thanks in advance!

Its actually not a blank. Its chambered in 280 rem at the moment. Its got about 200rnds or less down it. Im going to cut it a rechamber to 7mm-300wm or something similar. I really wanted a 7mm rogue but rbros tells me they arent doing any of those due to die issues. Im open to suggestions on other chamberings. Barrel life isnt really a concern of mine.

I would be interested in selling and buying a new blank but thought it may be tough to move in the 280 chambering. Plus my gunsmith is also a buddy and will do it for next to nothing or just let me do it. Just wondering if he is right in telling me I have to cryo treat it afterwards.

If it's a straight 1.25", and you were planning to "cut it down to 28 inches"...

There should be plenty of meat for a buyer to lop off the breech end so he can rechamber it in any 7mm cartridge and still have plenty of barrel length.

I definitely wouldn't put the money into a recontour unless I was really happy with everything else (including its chambering) about the barrel.

Sell it and buy what you want.

Kreiger charges a whopping $50 to recontour one of their straight blanks. If Brux will do so to a chambered barrel, i cannot imagine it will be much more.
