Dunno if this is the right section but its toward the bolt action more.

Still getting everything sorted out for my Savage M110 in 300wm.
My question now is concerning barrel length, Im goin to be using a YHM Phantom QD on the rifle most of the time. The Can is 8.5" long and 28 ounces.

What barrel length would you guys go with?
Ive seen alot of rifles using 18" barrels with good results, but to add a can on the end what kinda ill effects would result?
The weight and tension on the barrel, with it free floated in the stock, what you guys think?

Still trying to decide on a barrel, its goin to be a bull barrel with some weight to it. Shilen and Brux is what ive narrowed it down to i think..

Im goin to research on silencertalk also.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: barrel length and suppressor

Do not get an 18" barrel on a 300WM. It's a waste with that cartridge. You are seriously neutering it. I wouldn't go shorter than 24" even with a can. My old 300WM had a 26" threaded barrel and a 9" can on it and my new one has a 25" threaded barrel with the same SRT Shadow XL can. I want the ballistics of the 300WM and heavier bullets more than worrying about a few inches off the end of the barrel. If you are really worried about barrel length then go with a .308 instead of the 300WM.

Re: barrel length and suppressor

300 Win Mag is a different beast than the 308. There is a longer powder burn and the projectile has more to gain in flight from completing the propulsion stage out of the barrel.

Ditto what Rob01 pointed out.

Ill be the first guy to go 18, 20.5 or 22 on the barrel length of my 308 but for the 338 and 300WM, you are using a magnum type cartridge for a reason. Make sure your rifle reflects that purpose.

This is a solid question, what is your application with said platform?
