I am looking at the new Savage Varmint rifle in 223. The rifle comes with a 26"---1in9 barrel. I will be using it for a short range varmint rifle(out to 300, maybe 350 yards). I am also going to add a suppressor to the rifle. I was going to cut the barrel down to 20 inches for the suppressor. IMO thsi is a good length. The problem is the barrel is fluted from the factory. Has anyone put a suppressor on a fluted barrel?? Are there any problems I could run into?? I am sure if I cut the barrel down to 20 inches I will run into the flutes. If I leave the barrel a little longer-is there a shorter suppressor that would work for me??

I plan on shooting a 50 or 55 grain bullet in this rifle. And I also plan on working up a sub-sonic load for close barn yard shots. Tom.

Re: Barrel LENGTH vs Suppressor

personally i havent done this but in my opinion i see no problem cutting into the flutes, and as far as suppressor lengths i think most are above 6 inches, i know you want somthing short but i would keep the barrel full length and just thread it.

no matter what the length of the barrel the suppressor will do its job, i hope i have helped a little any way
