barrel length

when everyone talks about barrel length.......say "yea i got a 22" barrel" etc...

is this the total barrel length threaded into the barrel, or from the front of the recoil lug forward?

yea kinda a dumb question, but was curious anyhow

Different strokes for different folks.

I use a cleaning rod to measure length from the boltface.
USMC if I recall correctly measures from the recoil lug forward (so their 22" is closer to my 24")..........

It's only important if your State statute defines how to measure it.
Michigan's does, for SBR's.

The M40A3 barrel is 24" from the lug, which puts it closer to 25" when measured from the bolt face.
