Hunting & Fishing Barrel Life

Re: Barrel Life

Not sure, but I've got close to 3K in mine. This target is from 2008, but it still shoots this well.

Re: Barrel Life

Depends on how you treat the gun. I have shot out three 22-250 barrels shooting p-dogs on hot summer days and not letting the barrel cool enough. Round count was unknown, but still very high. That's abuse, not use.

I have about 2500 rounds on my VSSF and it still shoots incredibly well. The last time I shot five groups of five shots, the aggregate was around 5/8 inch. I have about 3,000 rounds on a Savage Model 10 Predator and it is starting to get an occasional flier and the groups have opened up a bit. Still sub-MOA.

Re: Barrel Life

3,000 is the number I've READ the most. But no real experience. One of my shooting buddies has over 4,500 through his. Yeah the throat is gettin long, but you just adjust your seating depth to match. He is pretty good on pacing himself though. If you keep it down to one round per minute you can shoot all day.

That's how I abuse mine, I shoot and shoot and shoot. I only have 5 or 6 days to shoot the dogs, but the rest of the year to change a barrel once it's shot out. That being said, I have 2,350 rounds through mine, and no decrease in accuracy at all yet, even being harsh on it.

My opinion, just shoot it and don't worry about it.

Re: Barrel Life

depends on barrel manuf and obviously weight, twist, veloc, etc... Competition use like HP and long-range will rarely go past 2K on a good barrel without weakened groups. I also have friends in 6BR with 4500+ rnds and still competing. In my experience in/around the comps the barrel maker has the biggest impact on life by far. **That being said.... this is info on competition groups, BUT it definitely is a good indicator to understanding expected life of any barrel regarding accuracy breakdown. good luck.
