Gunsmithing barrel removal tools

Re: barrel removal tools

I personally loved my Surgeon action wrench until it broke, I haven't replaced it yet, but now I use an around the action wrench when removing factory barrels. I bought my setup off eBay and have referred several people to him for an action wrech barrel vise combo pack. He has great prices and they work awesome. I personally bought the 4-bolt model cause it was the biggest and badest, in hind sight I would only buy the 2-bolt version. I never tighten all 4 bolts cause it isn't necessary. Here is a link to the guy I recommend:

Huh?

Look for "barrel vise"

Look for "action wrench"

Get a wrench that surrounds the receiver for removing factory barrels. Get a vise with interchangeable bushings for different barrel profiles.

Re: barrel removal tools

put some newspaper around the barrel and you should be golden. You typically only get marring when the barrel slips. tighten it well and it usually doesn't happen. Many people use steel vises with no bushing whatsoever without any problems. Some rosin will help with grip too.

Re: barrel removal tools

For the barrel vise go to brownells and look for the vise with the aluminum sleeves with the four allen bolts. For an action wrench go to Holland shooting supplies and get his remington 700 wrench. This is the best, easiest wrench to use on remington 700 actions. This wrench will allow you to properly torque the action on the barrel. I use it daily and have never had a problem. If you have trouble finding either, let me know.Good luck

The barrel vises that Sinclair and the Tubb setup are usually for changing benchrest barrels that come off pretty easy.

If you plan on removing factory Rem700 actions from factory barrels-you had better get a VERY high quality action wrench and a very heavy duty barrel vise. You'll find factory barrels are tight-tight enough to wreck the action if you aren't careful.

Brownell's will have everything you need. One of those 4 bolt aluminum barrel vises is NOT the way to go.

Re: barrel removal tools

Please read carefully. I said 4 bolt aluminum sleeve barrel vise. The vice body is made of steel. It is the best vice offered from brownells. It uses different inside diameter Aluminum sleeve that won't marr the finish on a barrel, especially if you use rosin, which I do recomend. This is not to say others don't do a great job. As any one with a bit of wisdom knows, there are many ways to do anything. I am only offering advice on what I consider a proven way that I use on a daily basis in my shop. I wish you the best results in which ever way you choose.

Re: barrel removal tools

The barrel vice from Brownells is a very good way to go. I use the steel bushings, but have made a number of bushings out of aluminum that work very well. Either will serve you well regardless of how tight the barrels are. As STR said, rosin is a good idea with the aluminum bushings....

Re: barrel removal tools

To make a barrel vise, I bolt two 2"x2" pieces of steel together with a shim between them. Then I bore a 1.5" hole in the crack.
I bore out 1.5" round pieces of Aluminum to make a collet for a particular barrel diameter. I then slit or split the collet.

To make a Rem700 action wrench, I made another barrel vise, as the Rem700 receiver has no flat bottom to wrench.

The barrel vise is bolted to a 350 pound table and the action wrench has a long lever handle.
