Thanks in advance for any help. I am currently building my first custom rifle and have a question about chamber protrusion. I am ordering a barrel from Lothar Walther. I have them threading to a Remington 700 action and chambering to 300 win mag. I plan to set headspacing with a finising reamer and go gauge, I would like to know is there a set material .005"-.010" or something that would be a good amount to have them leave on to finish with the reamer? I want to get it close so I don't have to remove a ton of material but want enough left to not have to re-face the barrel. I have access to a full machine shop but little experience with rifle barrels/actions. If anyone could point me in the right direction as to how much protrusion to get me close to finish it with a reamer would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is potentially oofing 380 to 1200 shekels worth NOT taking it somewhere to have done professionally?

Quite possibly, yes. Learning, improving skills. May also save six months or more, depending on how busy your gunsmith is.
Thanks for the responses guys. I agree having a gunsmith do the work is a good idea and I already contacted the only one I know of locally to get his cost and timing. I do agree with mallrat as well, I would like to get more hands on with my weapons and learn and improve skills. I worked in a machine shop to help get me through college so I am by no means new to maching just new to any sort of gunsmithing. From what I have researched it sounds pretty straight forward to finish reaming a barrel just takes a lot of patience and go slow... If I do do it myself I would like some feedback if anyone has a good staring point as far as how much material to leave for the final reaming. Thanks again.
Well researching more and I think I confused myself again... so I will call Lothar Walther tomorrow but reading on the belted mags can I order my barrel before receiver as this is the longest lead time of the build? I can't measure my actual receiver but is there a general number for 300win mag and a 700 Remington that will leave me safe as far as what to put for chamber protrusion? Thanks
Just order a preturned and threaded short chambered barrel for your 700. That's all you need to do. 300 WM 1/10 twist or what ever you want. They will leave enough for you to finish.
