Gunsmithing Barrel threading not flush with the crown?

Hey guys quick question. I picked up a barrel second hand and had questions on the barrel threading.

The crown is recessed and the threads are forward from the crown. I’ve never seen a barrel like this and was wondering if I should just chop this thread extension off and thread at the crown.

This will be used with a suppressor. It’s also a Lothar walther rim x .22 barrel if that matters.

Maybe there’s some rimfire voodoo I’m not aware of but that doesn’t look right to me.

A few do it that way, Anschutz does for one--at least on some. It's to prevent the threading from impacting the bore diameter....

It's typically a good thing...more operations, machine time, and cost. Shoot it, see how it does.

Sounds good I just didn’t want to blow up my suppressor haha. Just haven’t seen threads like that before.

Right....but just like any other second hand ( or new) barrel you are putting a suppressor on, check it.

I.e alignment rod, look down the bore with the can on, a few into paper to be sure they are not doing something squirrelly, etc.

ANY barrel can have issues.

That’s how a proper rimfire thread should be imo. Keeps it protected and keeps it from flaring the bore choke.

Thanks. I’m just getting into the rimfire world so I wasn’t use to seeing muzzle threads like that.

This is exactly how RF treads should be cut, although the diameter of the counterbore is comically large it accomplishes the same goal

From what I've read on turning down a muzzle for threading, button rifled barrels tend to have the bore open and bell out at the muzzle if there is not enough steel around the muzzle. Cut rifled barrel makers and/or gunsmiths claim this does not happen to cut rifled barrels. I've also heard that cold hammer forged barrels actually do the opposite of button rifled barrels, they contrict and get tighter at the bore as they are turned down. Basically if you are going to thread a muzzle, a 3/4" diameter is the safest way to go. Kind of surprised the industry has gone with 5/8 as a standard threading for most rifles. The way yours is threaded has these affects of threading in mind. Counterbore looks excessive but probably fine.

There are a lot of great smiths that have been doing it worng for years. Reminds me of quip about reloading. "There are 10 steps I do making good ammo and 4 of them make no difference in accuracy. We are just not sure which 4 don't matter."
