I have a 24" 5r in .308 and I'm considering having the barrel cut down to 18" and having a RAD brake installed. I was wondering if I would just be better off to sell it and get another base custom from RWS built. I figure with shipping and the price of gunsmithing I will have about $300 in it. I'm just looking for some opinions of what I should do.

Nothing wrong with the rifle you have and the 5r's are known for their accuracy. I'd personally just modify it to your preferences. I'd decide everything you want done over the long haul though so you’re not shipping it out over and over again.

Re: Barrel work on 5r

My 5R has an excellent barrel, it shoots very well and does not copper at all.

I had the barrel set back, action trued, custom recoil lug installed and rechambered with a match reamer.

It does not really shoot much better, but it is more consistent. Before I had the work done the groups would open up just slightly and wander just a bit (not bad, it was quite good for a factory gun).

I wouldn't normally recommend all that work on a factory tube, but mine shoots so well, I figured, why not?
