Gday,
I have noticed a bit of interest in some of my posts about the Barrett 98B , so i have written a review of the rifle. Hopefully it will be useful to someone. Sorry if the pictures are a bit average.

First impressions:
the rifle comes assembled inside a black pelican 1750 case and is pretty heavy.the case is of the usual high standard of pelican cases .

On opening the case i found the 98B fully assembled, 2 magazines and the manual . as well as a copy of the barrett magazine and a whole bunch of other membership forms etc.The foam inside is all cut exactly to shape , there are four spaces for magazines.

Removing the rifle for the first time i noticed the weight was substantial , although very balanced for a rifle with a 27inch barrel. i had a good look over the rifle and saw no marks .
The two supplied magazines are of polymer construction , and are 10 round staggered feed. the are stamped with the barrett logo on the bottom.

Ok so starting form the muzzle and working my way back. the rifle is fitted with a 2 port muzzle brake which is held in place by a locking nut to the rear. the brake is very effective i have found , and makes the rifle very pleasent to shoot!

The barrel is 27 inches and length and has 8 flutes.it dissapears into the forend of the rifle into what appears to be a barrell extension .
29962_419778767525_615067525_5563221_6849796_n.jpg

moving down the rifle the forend has been drilled and tapped to fit accessory rails at the 3,6 and 9 o'clock positions. the rifle is supplied with one rail which also holds one of the quick release sling swivels. i personally do not like how the swivels are fitted to these rails , i would rather mounting points directly to the forend however these are very solid and smooth in there operation.

The rifle is fitted with a harrisBR bipod ,same as any other haris.

The rifle is stamped on the RHS with the barrett logo and on the LHS with the serial number.

The bolt handle is a polymer ball ,positioned nicely above the trigger guard, and very easy to manipulate , the bolt lift is quite easy , and the bolt travels very smoothly through its polymer guides.

The magazine release is aluminium , ambidextrous in operation , and not to stiff. magazines make and audible click on insertion.the release is easily operated with your trigger finger, without comprimising grip or sight picture.

Re: Barrett 98 Bravo 338LM Review (Pics)

The trigger is flat and wide , which is something i like and breaks clean at 2 pounds every time from the factory.

The safety is an AR style lever , with a solid click into position. the safety cannot be engaged without the bolt being cycled ,(or at least raised and lowered). it is able to be removed and placed on either side of the rifle.

The pistol grip can be exchanged with any ar15 compatible grip, the one supplied is very good though , so i wont bother. the bottom of the grip is hinged , opening this reveals a small compartment suitable for battery storage.

The butt is made from a solid piece of aluminium , not plastic like i have heard some people say , it has a adjustable cheekpiece(only height) and a monopod. the knobs for both of these can be changed to either side of the butt. this is also the location of the rear sling swivel attachment pont , on both the right and left side. the butt pad is a soft rubber, seems easy to damage , but i haven't yet.

The rifle breaks down similar to an m16/m4/sr25, when the bolt is raised , you can press a latch on the bottom of the stock , releasing it from the upper , swinging on a front removable hinge.

You can then remove the trigger group , bolt and guides . heres the rifle broken down =

The bolts big and heavy , some pretty high chamber pressures in the 338lm , so some pretty decent lugs too.

The polymer bolt guides are very solid , well made and really do make the bolt travel very smooth.
29962_419781262525_615067525_5563341_1125887_n.jpg

The trigger is fully user adjustable for both sear engagement and weight .
29962_419781632525_615067525_5563354_2588324_n.jpg

i havent bothered to adjust mine as i like the 2lb at the moment.

Overall its very different to any other bolt rifle i have seen or used. its very accurate , and very user friendly.

having used an AW338LM as well as the barrett , i dont have a favourite. i like different things about each of the rifles , however i am very happy i purchased the 98B.

i dont have any complaints , apart from Barrett do manufacture a bore guide for the 98Bravo but are to stingy to include it.

hope this helps , for any questions or more pictures PM me.

cheers ,

Anthony

Re: Barrett 98 Bravo 338LM Review (Pics)

Nice write up Anthony.

I meet a guy at my local range in Vic with a 98B... He seemed to say the rifle was good but had some grief with a safety/firing pin issue when the rifle is tapped hard/dropped.

Have you had any such issue yourself?

Im looking to get a .338LM in the future when funds are available.

Considering either 98B, AWM, TRG in .338LM but rifles in this country are way too expensive, way over priced.

Contemplating even going .408Cheytac on a custom build, would be even cheaper than a factory .338LM.

Thanks for the write up mate

Re: Barrett 98 Bravo 338LM Review (Pics)

thanks for the feedback fellas ,

Dave, my problem was i couldn't stop telling myself i did NEED one !

Vincent, the problem with the safety etc was addressed very early on , and has been fixed . should be no probs on any rifle that made it to Aus after june last year .

either way barrett did a call back on any that were effected in the states , so i think he should contact them or his dealer .

i've had no issues at all yet , i will post any issues i have though. i hear what your saying about them being over priced. i'd put a lot of that down to greed from the importer/dealer.

pity for a box of 100rnds 338 lapua your lookin at about $850 , unprimed brass is $300 for 100, sometimes $400.

cheers mate

Re: Barrett 98 Bravo 338LM Review (Pics)

Good question , it hasnt been to a range as such , zeroed it in the field and had a crack at some improvised targets,

basically it shot around 1 moa groups at 100 m with hornandy 250gr hpbt, no real achievement , but i'm not big on shooting groups. shot a wooden disc about 30 cm in diameter at 600 m , pretty happy with that really.
