Gday,
I have noticed a bit of interest in some of my posts about the Barrett 98B , so i have written a review of the rifle. Hopefully it will be useful to someone. Sorry if the pictures are a bit average.
First impressions:
the rifle comes assembled inside a black pelican 1750 case and is pretty heavy.the case is of the usual high standard of pelican cases .
On opening the case i found the 98B fully assembled, 2 magazines and the manual . as well as a copy of the barrett magazine and a whole bunch of other membership forms etc.The foam inside is all cut exactly to shape , there are four spaces for magazines.
Removing the rifle for the first time i noticed the weight was substantial , although very balanced for a rifle with a 27inch barrel. i had a good look over the rifle and saw no marks .
The two supplied magazines are of polymer construction , and are 10 round staggered feed. the are stamped with the barrett logo on the bottom.
Ok so starting form the muzzle and working my way back. the rifle is fitted with a 2 port muzzle brake which is held in place by a locking nut to the rear. the brake is very effective i have found , and makes the rifle very pleasent to shoot!
The barrel is 27 inches and length and has 8 flutes.it dissapears into the forend of the rifle into what appears to be a barrell extension .
moving down the rifle the forend has been drilled and tapped to fit accessory rails at the 3,6 and 9 o'clock positions. the rifle is supplied with one rail which also holds one of the quick release sling swivels. i personally do not like how the swivels are fitted to these rails , i would rather mounting points directly to the forend however these are very solid and smooth in there operation.
The rifle is fitted with a harrisBR bipod ,same as any other haris.
The rifle is stamped on the RHS with the barrett logo and on the LHS with the serial number.
The bolt handle is a polymer ball ,positioned nicely above the trigger guard, and very easy to manipulate , the bolt lift is quite easy , and the bolt travels very smoothly through its polymer guides.
The magazine release is aluminium , ambidextrous in operation , and not to stiff. magazines make and audible click on insertion.the release is easily operated with your trigger finger, without comprimising grip or sight picture.
