Rifle Scopes Barrett Optical Ranging System for Leupold Mark 4

I recently saw the BORS or Barrett Optical Ranging System. I currently have a Leupold Mark 4 which is one of the optics compatible with the BORS. Its not going on anything fancy just a Remington 700 VTR.

I am a novice distance shooter and from the videos that I have seen on the BORS it looks like a cool tool. From the way they market BORS, it looks as though anyone with a range finder and the ability to adjust for windage could almost put lead on target first round. I know that the BORS is expensive, and its job can be done with familiarity with your weapon system so its almost pointless to get. But where I shoot the maximum range I can achieve safely is approximately 300 yards. Not far by any means. My thinking is that the BORS could potentially help me when I go hunting on different terrain and need to reach out a little further then 300 without having to SWAG hold over.

Has anyone had experience using the BORS? Another thing I am interested in is once zeroed with a certain round, can the BORS compensate for different ammo? For instance I have 168gr Sierra Matchking HP-BT rounds. If I were to zero the BORS to those rounds and then switch to a 175gr Sierra Matchking HP-BT, could I use the BORS to recalculate telemetry of the round without having to rezero? Thanks

You zero the first bullet and save it to the unit. Then, re-zero with the next bullet weight and save it to the unit. All you have to do is name them accordingly, and when you switch ammo, just pick the correct one from the drop down table in the unit. It remembers the zero for that cartridge, and does the adjustment for you.

You would still have to zero with the new round. Honestly, for the amount of money it costs you'd be better off investing in other things, and getting a good ballistic app for a pda or your phone.

These things are tools to help you...when they break, fail, leave you for dead.....you're gonna be glad you know how on your own even if its not as fast as the next guy.

The money for the BORS can get you things like a good Kestrel, a data book, a mil dot master, a level, an ACI, a modest spotting scope, ammo and still have money left over.

300yds is a chip shot for a .308....you just need more trigger time and become confident with your equipment.</div></div>


this.. i had a student that had a BORS on a mk4... the data we got from my ipod app was better then the bors...

the mk4 is mehhh.... the bors is mehhhh... the $$ i would invest is better spent on other things

Thanks for the help and advice guys. I'll take all of this into consideration when making my decision.

I agree that for the money you can buy allot of ammunition and other tools to help your shot, I also agree with the statement about failure of equipment. But the BORS does still appeal to me because of the flexibility it can provide without me having to spend allot of time at the range. Its difficult for me to get time to shoot considering I work in a large city when not deployed and can only shoot every so often.

If I could I would shoot everyday and all day. But it isn't feasible at the moment and I am considering the BORS an alternative means to achieve quick accuracy with changing condition's.

I'll update if I do end up buying the BORS or something else but again thanks for the help and advice.

I used a BORS on a nightforce topped rig that a friend had out at the range the other day. It is a great idea. . . . but spend your money on ammo instead.

Get the Bullet flight app for your iPod or iPhone and put the rest of the money you would spend on the BORS into ammo practicing. With the proper data my bulletflight is spot on.

I agree. I have been doing quite a bit of research on this and am leaning towards ballistic apps and extra range time to the BORS.

Horus Vision has a Kestral that has ballistic software built into it that looks pretty cool too.

hi there,

I have purchased the BORs recently for the nxs 8-32 model and have played with it abit. I think its a great tool if you have the opportunity to shoot or hunt with one.

The first issue was to find the right model of NXS which suits the BORS. the new NXS models are not compatible apparently so i got the scope off a friend. then I box tested the scope so i could enter all the right variables in the barrett software.

I zeroed it at 100yds and took it to 500yds. the first shot 3 inches high. I spun the turret to read the distance displayed by the BORS and it matches the data i have collected in the field by +/- 0.5MOA which suffices my needs and those it was made for. Basically if you were using this for hunting, it would be a great addition to the kit although I would still keep my tables handy.

I printed a small card which I attached with a key ring to the right side of the Surgeon action showing a windclock for those distances from 100-1000 for a quick glance.

Its a joy to use. The battery doesn't last long though so I would keep two other batteries handy if i was hunting with this unit.

next outing will take it to a 9/1000 yards and see what we get.

A BORS would be fun to play with but it is not necessary. Just take your clicks on a good scope and be done with it.

You're going to do what you want, but not for me. You have gotten much practical advice for many expericienced shooter. I agree you should shoot much more then decide what you need. Especially not necessary at 300 yd max.

i used 1 for a week on a SASS.. not that impressed.... cant use G7, cant use multi g1's

my ipod data was more accurate...
