My rifle is on it's way back to me from GAP and this question has been nagging me.

What's the difference between a Bartlein #7 contour and a #7 GAP contour?

From what I can find on the Bartlein website the #7 is their MTU contour. The site doesn't mention a GAP contour. GAP's site doesn't mention it either.

Re: Bartlein #7 GAP Barrel?????

I'm not sure about the GAP contour, but I have a GAP rifle with a Bartlein #7 barrel on it. Honestly it is a pretty damn heavy barrel and I am already looking forward to getting something lighter put on when this one wears out.

Thanks for the help. Do you have any pics?

This is what a #7 looks like.

Re: Bartlein #7 GAP Barrel?????

Thanks razor100.

The only previous details I've found for a USMC spec #7 contour states the following:

Length: 24"
Diameter: 1.180" maximum. 1.175" minimum outside diameter at the receiver. Tapering approximately .01159" per inch to the muzzle

Source = Sench "The One Round War", p264

Re: Bartlein #7 GAP Barrel?????

I dont believe the Gap barrel is the same as a spec m40a1 barrel its something GAP and R+D precision came up with.

the usmc spec barrel is 1.20" for 4" tapering to either .91 or .92" at 26.5". after chambering the shank is left 3" long and the barrel is cut to 24" in length.

edited to add- the numbers in my other post for the GAP barrel came from the GA precision website on creusaders and Rocks with 22" barrels

Re: Bartlein #7 GAP Barrel?????

Our #7 contour (1.250 x 2.750 str. taper to .930 @ 26") is the standard MTU contour (marksmanship training unit) and is still used today somewhat.

The GAP #7 contour which is what we call our #14 contour (1.200 x 4.000 str. taper to .900 @ 26") are the same.

The standard dimension for a M24 contour is 1.238 x 3.000 str. tapers to .905 @ what ever finish length is spec. doesn't matter if it is 27" or 24" or 22" etc....these are the dimensions given to us to make barrels for testing etc....

This is what I use as a guide. Every barrel maker/factory/ etc...has a tolerance on the turning etc...and they will vary a little. I've seen factory barrels vary up to .020 on size as an example.

From 5' away you cannot tell the difference.

Later, Frank

The barrel on my GAP is a Schneider....not sure what difference that makes. TBA use Kreiger or Mike Rock according to their website

M-24 is slightly bigger but again pretty much the same.

MTU and NBRSA HV are alot bigger. </div></div>

Thanks George!!! UPS delivered my rifle today. All I can say is WOW. Please tell Karey, Tracey and Ern thanks for putting up with all of my questions, calls and emails. They were professional start to finish.

Kinda crappy pics, but maybe it will get you an idea. It's an obnoxious truck axle. </div></div>

DUDE SICK CAMO!!!!!

A buddy of mine is having a GAP built and asked them the same question. Their answer was that the GAP #7 contour is in-between Bartlein's #14 M40/M24 and #7 MTU contour. However, I would go by what Frank Green stated above...since they make these pieces of art.

I ordered a Bartlein #14 with my GAP barreled action. After measuring it was 1.195" to 0.940" at the muzzle (26" bbl).
