Base Jumping with a Glider Suit Video

Re: Base Jumping with a Glider Suit Video

sweet, wonder what kind of distance they are covering per flight/jump

willing to bet the military could find a use for the suits in some special operations

Re: Base Jumping with a Glider Suit Video

My buddy does this stuff, travels all over Europe going to BASE jump events, and has one of the wing suits. I'm hoping to get my civilian class A license this summer, then baby-step up to BASE jumping down the road. Looks incredible.

"Vampire V-1 is the result of 6 years of experience in continuous wing suit development. Main goals in design of the Phoenix-Fly Vampire V-1 wing suit were:

· to be able to fly far and fast as possible (glide ratio over 3:1 is expected for the best wing suit flyers) "

There are some great videos relating to these guys including a jet propelled one where two jets on the ankles (100lbs thrust) result in a 200 F.P.M. rate of climb. Nap of the earth wingsuit flying is very dangerous.

Flight article Scenario L/D ratio / Glide ratio
Modern Sailplane gliding 45-70 (depending on span)
Hang glider 15
Gimli glider Boeing 767-200 with fuel exhaustion ~12
Paraglider high performance model 11
Powered parachute Rectangular/elliptical parachute 3.6/5.6
Space Shuttle Approach 4.5[3]
Wingsuit Gliding 2.5
Northern flying squirrel Gliding 1.98
Space Shuttle Hypersonic 1[3]
Apollo CM Reentry 0.368[4]

That is beyond awesome, I would give up sex for the rest of my life to be able to learn how to do that. Like said before not a very forgiving sport to learn, your first real jump has to be terrifying.

That's inevitable. One of these guys is trying to raise funding for a sloped runway that would allow them to fly right to (<span style="text-decoration: underline">not</span> <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">into</span></span>) the ground.

I've heard that as well, can't remember who it was though. I believe the idea was to have the ramp run down the Vegas strip. I think they were looking at Red Bull to sponsor it, seems right up there alley, with Travis Pastrana's jumps and all.

Probably either Jeb Corliss or Loic Jean-Albert.

EDIT:
Dogpile (I don't g**gle) for 'The Wingsuit Landing Project.'

Re: Base Jumping with a Glider Suit Video

Corliss is the one working on the ramp idea and there's another one, I forget who, also working on something.

And yes, this sport is unforgiving of the dim-witted or slow-reacting...

...but it IS a hoot!!
