I have a FN SPR A1a and want to see if it is possible to pillar bed the action. I removed the action and found that the front action screw is in a channel and not a hole. Is this going to be an issue when installing the pillars? I would think that the bottom action plate would have to be bedded to help support the pillar. Thanks for any help.

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

I did mine. You need to paint the devcon around the pillar to make it a hole instead of a half hole. The bottom metal doesn't need bedding.

Yeah do it this way. I've been doing it this way for years along with several other builders as well.

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

Randy, Pretty interesting. Would you say the benefit is more even support along the wider bottom metal and this also eliminates dealing with the front pillar (this way you dont have half a pillar or a full pillar with only bedding around half of the pillar)?

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

FWIW,

FNH USA uses GAP to do all of their bedding on the FN A3G SPRs.
After FN replaced my A5M, they sent it to them to be done as well.
(The way GAP does it, there are no pillars and the bottom metal is bedded as well.)

There are plenty of other shops that do great work as well though.

By the way, bedding seems to make a huge differnce with the SPRs.
Mine went from a .51" gun to a .26" gun at 100 yards.
(According to the FN test targets anyway.)

Hard to say, just about every FN benefits from bedding of any kind. With the FN DM you have no front screw hole to give adequate support for a front pillar, this created a bit of a headache and problem. Doing the pillars this way eliminated this issue and because the action is flat and the DM is wide it works out great. I bed the bottom metal so this to helps spread the load. Much easier to do then trying to get a pillar in half a hole.

I've helped several with this info and have seen it adapted to include other variations but basically the same concept.

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

Hate,

I have been looking at buying a SPR and it is nice to see that one can pillar bed the stock. Question(s):

-Did you have to make those pillars for that rifle/stock specifically or is there a kit that one can buy to do this?

-If I were to pillar bed an A1a, as is, then want to change to CDi bottom metal for AICS mags..... do I have to start all over again?

TIA

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

Mine was factory bedded (3 years back?) and it was less than impressive. The rifle shot well but the bedding really looked like someone just squirted some compound very sparingly around the action tail and lug area. When I installed the CDI bottom metal I bedded it properly and it does shoot a LOT better. I also bedded the bottom metal. If you got the Devcon use it!

Sorry but I did not.
Mine had pillars installed so it was a matter of relieving / removing old bedding material, getting the barrel to sit straight & level in the stock then mixing up the Devcon. I did the CDI metal after the action/stock was done and dressed up.

Re: Bed a FN SPR?

I had Scorehigh Gunsmithing in Albuquerque, NM bed my A1. They have a pretty good website: google Scorehigh Gunsmithing.
Before bedding, my factory test target was .55 with fgm 168smks, and now with 175 smk handloads i can get .4 on a good calm day whereas before bedding i was getting .6-.7s with 175s.
Also, they took the factory trigger down to a very sweet, crisp, 2.0 lbs or so from @ 4-5 lbs. That helps a lot too, and i recommend having the trigger worked over.
Last, scorehigh ran my scope through its paces, calculated its true adjustment values, and precisely aligned its balance--no more excuses for me but the wind after all that...
I plan on having them swap the A1 into an adjustable mcmillan stock someday--i'm happy with their work.
I just put the A1 through the Raton, NM sporting rifle match this March and got a 36 on my first try--should have been @ 41 but i'll spare you those excuses...
Overall: Bed that FN and have the trigger worked over and you'll be happy you did.

Contact Gerald Kuthy. [email protected] or call 740-498-8790. This guy is top notch, affordable, and can tell you he does plenty of these. If you still wanted to do it yourself, im sure he would lead you in the right direction

I'm getting ready to pillar bed an FN SPAR A1. Like the OP said the front action screw hole is confined by the bottom metal, the pillar won't fit without cutting the pillar in half. I can't see the pictures Hateca posted as its been over a decade now. Any ideas to install a pillar on the front? Thanks.
