Mike (the mod) and I argued about what the greatest piece of music ever written is. He was right, this is it. If you've never listened to it in it's entirety you owe it to yourself to do so, preferably on a really good sound system. This is a movie about how Beethoven, deaf at the time, composing it, and the effect it has had throughout the world.

Edit: I would disagree that this is the greatest piece of all time for 2 reasons, it is impossible to agree on the criteria for "greatest", and it would take a lifetime of assessment to go through all of the candidates for this title. But I would absolutely agree that this piece would, at a minimum, share the title.

I felt the same way. Hard to call anything"best" but when I reviewed all the music I know I had to say that both in scope of the work, and in the amount of people touched, I cant find another piece of musical work that bests it. One possible exception 'might' be Handel's Messiah, but that's some what limited to the Christian peoples where as the 9th reaches to all mankind.

I did check out Sissel, beautiful voice. Crystalline clear. never been much of an opera fan but am going to my first tomorrow. looking forward to it.

And this is why discussions around the topic are so difficult. Beethoven died before the transition between classical and romantic periods was complete. So was it Berlioz or Beethoven that is representative? Scholars have written countless volumes debating such divisions. And because the transition period was anything but a mark on the calendar scholars also disagree on the exact beginning and end of these periods. A lot of scholars would dismiss Norton's Anthology (of anything) as a crude bit of cliff notes. It is my direct experience that most scholars who write about but have never played the music have little understanding of the music itself anyway. While serious study (and listening) is required, we are still left with shades of gray. We are also left with what we like and don't like. My personal opinion is that to really understand the musical differences you would have to learn to play it, though not necessarily master it. In a 24 hour period I watched one of my old classmates, who is a great trumpet player, demonstrate and explain classical music only to have Yo Yo Ma say a few things quite different.

It seems we have a few people here who have spent some time with this music (ha, who would have thought that about a gun site?!), but we will never settle it for sure.

Ludwig Van was an incredible composer, but he was no Mozart.

My favorite musical instrument is the human voice. This is one of the most expert performances with that instrument I ever have come across:

"Song of the Volga Boatmen" is an Imperial Russian-era (pre-Soviet) folk song, literally the Russian parallel to "Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal." There have been two, maybe three Russian bass-baritones who have "owned" this song, but Leonid Kharitonov, IMHO, was incomparable.

When the chorus joins in (@2:10), if it doesn't make the hair stand up on the back of your neck, you have no soul.

But I like Beethoven's Third, for its sheer emotional depth. Because his Third wasn't just unconventional, it was also revolutionary.

In general:

For craftsmanship: Brahms
For genius: Mahler
For emotion: Tchaikovsky

And Mozart's 40th is up there as well, for it's perfection and phrasing, but it's almost too perfect. That's why I don't like Mozart.

I prefer a stronger baritone. For 9th 'duty' I think there are only two choices, and second to the performer below (Talvela), my choice would be Kurt Moll. I don't think I've ever heard a recorded baritone do the 9th better than Martti Talvela. He belts it out from his shoes.

Check out Tears of Stone album, Sinead "Factory Girl" and one by Joni Mitchell "The Magdalene Laundries" which I really like the acoustic.

I learn about this album through this book/DVD, the author use it as a reference to tune HiFi systems.

The sound of the cannons would resonate off the tunnel walls. She not only taught me the sound finer music, but she brought me into manhood. Jesus, what a summer. She imprinted my love of crazy redheads into my being.

My experience was in the late 90's at Ft. Hood. 4th of July concert with laser show. They did the 1812 Overture and had M109 155's live-firing into the impact area for the finale. Set off every car alarm for what seemed like 500 yards around. Glorious!
