Please help me with a discussion. I have a factory Remington 700 that is due to be replaced due to its age. The action is in good shape-nice and smooth. I would prefer to re barrel with a good custom barrel from a good reputable company instead of replacing the rifle with a factory new one from Remington. What do you think?

Good plan except... I suggest you cruz the ads on this site for a good BA. In the current environment good accurate bolt guns are cheap. What caliber? Is your barrel gone? If you run a WTB ad you will be inundated with offers.
Also you should get that barrel on order prior to needing it. It can take a while at times.
Good luck either way and if you re barrel I suggest you consider Chad at LRI, he has a presence on this site. Lot of other good folks as well but I really like the communication and service I get with LRI.

A lousy custom barrel is going to better than a great factory barrel. Once you've rebarreled a couple of M700s, you can't wait for your factory barrel to wear out so you can get a new one!

you never know maybe he found an answer or solved the problem I only posted cause I found that link to a company that can check out barrel life and wear , I never even knew that was a thing till tonight .

are you sure your barrel is gone ? I have been looking for a while now and found this maybe you have more life in your barrel than you think maybe not https://www.nts.com/services/testing/non-destructive/firearm-barrel-life-analysis/ depending on the cost of it . just found this myself tonight . hope it helps

There is one issue with this.

They can't tell you when a barrel quits shooting.

Until they have a large enough sample size to determine an average bore diameter, rifling erosion, and throat erosion point at which the average barrel starts deviating from an accuracy standard set by the same barrel it's just data collection.

The only true way to conclude a barrel is truly worn out at this point in time and technology is that it quits being consistently accurate.

have only just yesterday written to them to find out all they can do I have no expatiation of anything just answering a few of my own questions , But as it is I have no idea what that company can actually do .
