Beretta ARX160: Thoughts or Updates?

So I've been checking out the next-gen semi automatic rifles coming out or allegedly coming out. Next to the Tavor, perhaps the most promising release is the ARX160 that Beretta has issued in the military but not to the civilian market... Yet.

I know this has been promised for something like four years, give or take, and is essentially (as somebody pointed out in another thread) vaporware at this point. However, I'm idiotically optimistic, so I still have hopes it will be released. It's in the 2nd round of the Individual Carbine competition and it has a lot of features, so maybe we see more of it soon. It also has competing features with the SCAR & ACR while having the non-reciprocating barrel the former doesn't while being lighter than the latter. Plus, pure ambi-features, fast barrel changes, and just seems well thought out.

So, does anybody have any info as to whether or not this is still in development limbo? Or for that matter, any info on how well it's working for the Italian troops? It's an interesting gun. Of course, it's also a bit of a pipe dream at this time, but that's sort of beside the point.

-Cheers

it's hard to say really. you probably know just about as much as anybody else not directly involved with beretta.

one of the issues that i see is beretta's desire to get military(extremely doubtful) or LEO(at least plausible) contracts here in the USA. if,and that's a big if,agencies adopt this beretta, you possibly may never see it offered to the public, regardless of promises. that beretta hasn't straight out offered a G version of their 92 and 90-two to the public, even though they would be very popular, gives me doubt about any promises they make, the PX4 seems to be the exception. they're not the only ones that play this game though.

in any case, politics, economics and the fact that, for the individual carbine program,it has to show a significant improvement over the M4,i doubt that any of them will come out on top and be issued on a large scale(some already have limited roles though, like the versions of the SCAR and HK416),at least any time soon. the exception imo and for good reason,would/should/could be the SCAR 17/H,and that wouldn't be to replace the M4,at least this one makes alot more sense to me. all of this however, can play in favor to mere mortals.

...so who knows, maybe one day soon we'll see the ARX-160 offered, but for now,i wouldn't hold my breath until i see proof.

as an aside,the beretta ARX-160,for some reason,looks like/reminds me of a pot-bellied pig. that's not important though,lol.

Maybe. I've dug up about as much as I can.

True. However, they are shipping the .22lr version out this month. Allegedly. And they seem pretty adamant about making the 5.56 version available, probably in 2013 sometime. Granted, it's not on-hand so for now it simply does not exist. I still feel like there are reasons to be optimistic, even if this is far from a done deal.

True. However, Beretta has released rifles to the U.S., and in this case they already have the ARX160 available to military in Italy, the police in Mexico, and a few other places. It's been in-service for I believe four years, so they're already on the A2 model and I believe Beretta has a market in the U.S. Economics & politics I'm not going to begin to predict. However, if they can get past the legal and logistics side (which I think they can), and price it near where promised, it should fare favorably to the ACR and especially the SCAR.

Makes sense.

Yeah. It grows on you (or it did me). It probably helps if you like curves. But I'm a fan of form following function. In this case, while it could be made more streamlined, at least with a more slender handguard/rail (height-off-barrel could be lower) and without that arch connecting the barrel the magwell, it seems to work and has a lot of useful features, so I'm developing a crush on is.

Not a full blown romance, at least not until I get my hands on it, for now it's just a crush.
